The General Membership Meeting will be held at the Moose Lodge

10th and Steese, Fairbanks.

September 8th, 7 PM

From the Director:

It has been a while since we have had a Swineline. I will try and catch up, but I am sure I will miss something or forget someone. If I do, please remind me at the meeting.

Welcome to all of our new members and we are looking forward to meeting you at our next meeting.

I am sure you have all heard by now that the dealership has officially changed hands and the chapter has new sponsorship. Our new sponsors are John Haddad, Chuck Cartier and Chirs Chambers. I hope you all had a chance to meet them this past Saturday at the Grand Re-opening. Welcome aboard John, Chuck and Chris. John and Chuck will be at our chapter meeting on September 8. This will be an excellent opportunity to welcome our new sponsors and meet them if you have not already done so. Also, at the September meeting, we will be giving out the checks to the raffle charities.

The bike raffle is over and we have a new chapter member. The big winner and new chapter member is none other than Joe Larranga's brother, Ted. Congratulations Ted, and welcome to H.O.G. We are looking forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Thanks, Jerry Culver, for heading up this effort. It's a huge job and takes a lot of effort. We raised over $19,000.00, which means our charities will receive between $3,500.00 and $3,700.00 dollars each, after expenses. Great job Jerry, and thank you again.

The Golden Days Parade was a success. The H.O.G. float won the Best Non-commercial Entry Trophy. Congratulations to Hoppy and crew for a great job. I won't try to and name everyone who helped, because I am sure I will miss someone. I will ask Hoppy to tell us at the meeting.

On July 23, we had our PIGs vs. H.O.G.s softball game and MDA fundraiser. The weather didn't cooperate, but we managed to get the game in and have a good time. Not to mention we raised about $350.00 for MDA. Thanks to all who came out and supported the effort. Yes! We lost. I don't remember the score

Good Riding,
Jim

Safety Officer

This will probably be the last column on riding safety this year. BOOOOO! I have noticed a few things we need to be looking for as the season ends. First, the August rains are opening potholes everywhere. Look out for them. They're popping up in places where they weren't before. Then, with new potholes comes new gravel. Both form the pothole itself, and from trucks hauling the stuff that hit the hole and spills some. Ether way, you could be in for a nasty surprise if your not looking for it.

Also, remember 40 degrees is a lot colder in September than it is in April, so dress for it. Hypothermia isn't something you want while your riding. It can cloud your judgment just as sure as a few drinks can, and is even worse than alcohol when it comes to motor control. (Your motor control not the motor in your bike.) Most of us know how to stay warm; otherwise we wouldn't still be here. If you're new to the interior, ask one of the old-timers. Most of us love to hand out advice and the girls at the shop love to sell warm gear.

If you are out early, watch for patches of ice after a frost, especially on bridges and wet leaves. Wet leaves on the ground can be just as slick as ice. With a little bit of care we can probably squeeze another five or six weeks of riding in. I hope so. Sierra Vista is looking better every day.

Ol' Joe says: Keep a close eye on those tire pressures in the fall. The changing temperature can mess up your pressure, cause blowouts, and make the bike handle squrirley.

Editor's Desk

We're back, and so is the Newsletter. The trip was great, only a bit on the warm side for us Alaskans. We totaled just less than eight thousand, problem free miles.

Our ride through the Yukon garnered ideas for future HOG adventures. First would be a ride to Watson Lake with a Fairbanks HOG sign to be added to the sign park. Everyone that rode would be able to sign his or her name with a wood burner upon arrival. Another ride that would offer input overload would be to Skagway, ferry to Hanes, then back home. Also, Dawson may be a fun destination, and via Whitehorse, the road is paved. Granted, these are long rides and would have to be planned far in advance, but if you find these ideas interesting, now is the time to plan for a trip of this nature. Let us know, and we'll make it part of next summer's schedule.

As everyone hopefully is aware, this is your newsletter. Any member that would like to submit an article for publication is welcome to do so. Articles for submission need to be placed in my drop at the Outpost or e-mailed to the address below no later than the 20th of the month.

As always, if there is a problem or you wish to change the way you receive your copy of The Swine-Line, call 458-7116 in the evening or e-mail: fbkhog@eagle.ptialaska.net

On a sober note, I will be retiring my position as Editor of the newsletter this November. I will gladly continue to update the Web site, convert the newsletter to HTML and take care of the monthly e-mails if the new Editor so desires, but with my added involvement in next year's rally, time constraints dictate the position of Editor has to go. Although the Web page has remained stagnant in the recent past, that should not continue. It is time to register our site with National HOG and update and expand information for next year's Rally. It may also be desirable to develop a "Members Only" area on our site. In the future, the club will need to discus what direction, if any, our web site should take.

Any member that is interested in the Editor's position should contact either Jim or Becky. Any questions you may have in regards to the position can be directed to me at the number or e-mail listed above.

From the Outpost

Can you believe it's September. all ready! And the fact we didn't get much of a riding season where the weather's concerned, really makes it depressing! But, fortunately, some of you were able to take riding vacations down below. We've heard some great Sturgis Stories here at the Outpost.

As most of you know, we officially have new owners now. John Haddad, Chris Chambers and Chuck Cartier are all very excited and have great plans for the dealership.

September means it's time for Harley-Davidson's National Open House. On Saturday, Sept. 9th ,we will be throwing a party to celebrate the 2001 models. Along with a sale, we'll have as many of the 2001 motorcycles on display as possible. Since it will no doubt be feeling like fall out, we'll keep you toasty warm with a great coffee bar, cake & cookies.

MOTORCLOTHES:

Jessie and Connie have been getting in some new fall merchandise that you'll want to check out. There is raingear to go along with our recent weather conditions! Jessie ordered a limited quantity to see how well they sell. You can also get the rain pants separately, if needed. There are some great deals on their boot/shoe clearance rack, as well as some new styles in the shop. We will no longer be carrying kids shoes. Our existing inventory is on sale (limited sizes available). Also (for the little Bikers) children's summer clothes will be 50% off during the National Open House Sale. For all you HOG members that like to snuggle up and stay warm on these fall days/nights, make sure you check out our sweatpants and new hooded sweatshirts in a variety of colors. For you men, Jessie and Connie have a great selection of leathers, plus new jeans and rugby style shirts. If you are planning on a trip south, you need to come in and see the new travel bags from Harley-Davidson, in two different sizes.

BIKE DEPT:
This new model year, Harley has come out with two new styles of bikes that will be a limited edition. Each dealer will only get one to three each. One is the Screamin Eagle Road Glide. This touring bike comes from the factory with the 95 in./1550ccs engine in a 3/Tone-color scheme with the eagle graphics. This bike also comes with a Tour-Pak, 12-disc CD Changer, and a H-D Factory Security System with alarm siren. The Outpost is getting two. One is a 3/Tone Blue and the second a 3/Tone Black & Gray, which is already sold. There's also a FXDWG2 (Wide Glide) in a Scarlet Red with gold-leaf flames. It comes with a tan leather seat with real ostrich inserts, Chrome Lightning Star Wheels - custom all the way! I will have brochures for you to look at during the Open House.

We are probably one of very few dealers who are selling these limited bikes for MSRP so don't wait if you want one.

PARTS DEPT:
Thomas is starting to get in a lot of cool, new 2001 accessories, and will have the new Parts/Accessories Catalogue available by the Open House. He is expecting some custom paints sets in for a Heritage Classic, Fatboy, and the Deuce. Hopefully, we'll get some of those in to show off as well. You need to ask Thomas about the "Wash Bucket"!

Letter of Thanks
North Pole Police Department

August 1, 2000

Hi. My name is Officer Steve Dutra, and I am writing this letter in order to express our department's appreciation with your help in our campaign for motorcycle safety. Our department is very happy with your efforts in making our motorcycle safety video. We appreciate the Fairbanks Hog Association's sponsorship of the video.

We hope that the effort we all have put into this video will help our community be a safer place for all of us, this summer season. This video is the fifth of many that our department will be making throughout the next calendar year.

It is the sponsorship of these videos by businesses like yours that allow us to continue our campaign to make our lives a little safer. We would like to encourage any feed back that you might have towards future Public Service Announcements. If you have any ideas for more videos, Please give me a call at (907 488-6902.

Again, thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.
