October; NOOOOOO! Well I'll do something different again. Seeing as how before the months over we'll be putting the bikes up for the season, (I didn't use that word). I will give some tips on storing a motorcycle.

The first thing to do is make a list of supplies that are going to be needed. Gas treatment: Harley Winter Gas Treatment, Stable, or STP Fuel Stabilizer. An old fashioned pump oilier. One or two concrete blocks, a two by six cut to the length of the blocks, or if your fancy a bike stand. A new set of spark plugs and wrench. An indoor Motorcycle cover (breathable cloth). A bottle of motor oil (any kind you're not going to put it in the crankcase).

Cleaning supplies; (Armor All, Soap Wax, ECT.), rags, A battery tender, Air pump (bicycle type will do nicely), and tire gauge. Then if you do your own minor maintenance, Engine Oil, transmission fluid, primary lube (for big twins), and oil filter. Now for what you don't have, go shopping! Thomas has most all of the stuff and Clark can help out if you don't understand something. If you have the shop do your oil changes, make arrangements to bring the bike in and have it serviced. Now this is important, have the shop bring the bike home. The reason is, if you don't heat the engine up to operating temperature and keep it there for twenty minutes or so you'll get water forming in the oil. This is a bad thing. It will attack the bearings and just generally shorten the life of the engine.

Well you've got everything, let's get to work. First add the recommend amount of fuel treatment to the gas tank for a full tank of gas, then ride the bike down to the gas station and top off the gas tank. This will mix up the fuel treatment and get it into the carb or the injectors. By toping off the fuel tank you don't leave air space where water can condense (water bad thing). If the shop is changing your oil do this before taking your bike in.

Now, change the oil and fluids while the engine is still hot. This gets the gunk that settles out of the oil when it cools off out of everything. Pull the spark plugs and use the pump oilier to squirt about tablespoon worth of oil into the holes. Put the new plugs in, or if you want to use the old ones, use a little Anti-seize compound on the threads. Spark plugs are cheap, so I don't reuse them. Then with the spark plug wires off crank the engine over till the oil light goes out. This will take the oil you put in the in the engine and coat everything good. Finally, take a rag, get it wet with oil (the cheap stuff) and plug the exhaust pipes with it. This will keep water out of the pipes, as well as small critters that might find a happy home in your exhaust pipes. That's it for the engine.

Next, wash the bike and do a good job of it. Rust will start where dirt holds moisture against the metal (water bad). Wax the bike, including the chrome. If you really want to keep the chrome looking good don't buff the wax off the chrome till the spring. It will be a lot harder to buff out in the spring but it will look better. Armor All the tires and rubber EXCEPT the brake lines. Never use anything but soap and water on brake lines.
Now we're just about done. Move the bike to where it's going to spend the next few months. I like to jack the bike up and block it up. That way the tires don't get flat spots and the springs don't take a set. This is a two-person job in most cases. Call a friend and don't hurt yourself. Don't be tempted to leave the jack under the bike. That can be a disaster waiting to happen. Concrete blocks will hold a motorcycle nicely. Don't use them under a car, as they won't hold that much weight and have been known to crush. Very dangerous, use jack stands under cars. If you can't block up the bike put an extra ten pounds of pressure in the tires. This will minimize flat spotting. Just remember to readjust the pressure in the spring. You should write this on a tag and tie it to the handlebars, along with anything else you know needs to be done in the spring, as a reminder. Hook up the battery tender. Those battery tenders will triple the life of a battery. They are well worth the money. Cover the bike with the Indoor cover, remove your safety glasses, and use a clean dry cloth to wipe the tear away. Hopefully next summer will be earlier and longer.

Finally; Ol' Joe says: Winter is nature's way of saying it's time to get to work in the shop. Get to it.

WANTED
Dead or Alive

Winter is upon us, and we have to store the bikes. Looking for indoor recreation? Can't shoot pool? Two left feet, can't dance, can't bowl? Aggressive tendencies need an outlet? There are pistol leagues forming for the winter! Yes, winter shooting in the new indoor range, across from Fish and Game on College Road. I've been in the range and it's really nice. Here comes the hook. I need three to five pistolaros to fill out a team. The cost would be ten dollars per meet plus targets and ammunition. Dates and times have not been set yet. The management is trying to see if there will be enough interest. I'm interested. If you are give me a call at 488-1728 or E-mail to the link below.

Editor's Desk

As everyone hopefully is aware, this is your newsletter. Any member that would like to submit an article for publication is welcome to do so. Articles for submission need to be placed in my drop at the Outpost or e-mailed to the address below no later than the 20th of the month.

As always, if there is a problem or you wish to change the way you receive your copy of The Swine-Line, call 458-7116 in the evening or e-mail: fbkhog@eagle.ptialaska.net

On a sober note, I will be retiring my position as Editor of the newsletter this November. I will gladly continue to update the Web site, convert the newsletter to HTML and take care of the monthly e-mails if the new Editor so desires, but with my added involvement in next year's rally, time constraints dictate the position of Editor has to go. Although the Web page has remained stagnant in the recent past, that should not continue. It is time to register our site with National HOG and update and expand information for next year's Rally. It may also be desirable to develop a "Members Only" area on our site. In the future, the club will need to discus what direction, if any, our web site should take.

Any member that is interested in the Editor's position should contact Becky. Any questions you may have in regards to the position can be directed to me at the number or e-mail listed above.

From the Outpost

Our new owner, John Haddad, was finally able to ignore his busy schedule for an evening and attended last month's HOG meeting. He got a chance to meet some of you in person. John has decided to have me start taking names and desired model for a "PRE-DEPOSIT" 2003 LIST. We can't guarantee the exact model will be available for everyone. But, this will give us an idea of who wants what. Then, when John gives the word, I will be contacting everyone on the list for a deposit to reserve a bike.

Anyone who is interested in the Board positions of Director, Asst. Director, Secretary and Treasurer, or other club positions, such as Editor, LOH, Webmaster, Photographer, Historian, etc., needs to contact myself to set-up a convenient time for both yourself and John to meet during the month of November. After meeting with everyone, John will be appointing the positions needed for a term of 2 years. The newly appointed Board and support positions will be announced at the Christmas Party

More Bikers in Government

Greetings all! I apologize for not being more visible at meetings in the recent past, but other circumstances always seem to show their ugly faces. At any rate, many of you know that I am running for Borough Assembly Seat F on this October's municipal ballot. I believe in individual freedom through lower taxes, a broader tax base, and through individual choice of what Borough services people want to pay for. As a member of HOG I certainly enjoy riding my scoot as much as possible. Some members of the Assembly are throwing around ideas of anti-motorcycle legislation based on time of operation and noise pollution issues. You can count on my vigorous defense of motorcycle rights, and to represent you to the Borough Assembly. Thank you, and I would appreciate your vote on October 3rd. I will see everyone at the next meeting!

You're In the Wind,
John R. Mazzitello, Candidate
Borough Assembly Seat F

Note from Joe

Well boys and girls, it is that time of the year again when the old chicken man hits the road. As usual for this summer, I am leaving in the rain. Nothing new, been riding in the rain all summer anyway. This time I am headed for the summer, desert, warmth, sun, no rain or snow. Praise God. You folks ride safe for the rest of the season, as short as it may be.
Have a good winter. Sydney and I will see you on the road.
God Bless
Chicken Joe
