From the Director

Hey Gang! The Road King is in the trailer and the snowmachines are prepped and ready to go… ya gotta ride something! While fall is my favorite time of year, it's this in-between period that always gets me. There's too much ice to ride the scoot and not enough snow to ride the snowgos. Thank God for baseball playoffs and high school football (how about those North Pole Patriots?) While it was sad that Rhonda decided to step down from her position on the board, I understand her reasons for doing so and support her 100%. She has assured me that she will be the integral part of H.O.G. that she has been in the past. It was great to give checks out to the charities again at Octobers membership meeting. Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Fairbanks Breast Cancer Detection both do a fantastic job in our community and we should all be proud of the support we give them. Don't forget, the November membership meeting will be on the 19th due to the fact the some of us will be basking in the Caribbean sunshine. Don't forget your specially formulated SPF900 Alaska sun block! Hope to see you at the Salcha Halloween party the end of the month. It will be a fun time for all and a great way to help out the seniors. If you're still riding, (they were in Anchorage last weekend) ride safe and ride free.

Raven

Assistant Director - Rhonda

Boy has it been a busy month for Joe and I. We put three roofs on our rentals and hauled off 28 loads of trash in four weeks through rain; wind, snow and we were even blessed with nice sunny days. Both lost weight and have lots of bruises. Thanks to Joe and Deb Villa who helped us a few times. That cruise is looking better every day. Won't be long now!

As you all know we lost one of our HOG members on September 21 due to a backhoe accident. His name is Ron Desrochers. He and his wife Cynthia rode a few times with the group and went on the Tuesday night runs with LOH. He will be missed. A few of us went to his funeral and the church was standing room only and they had his bike there. Tom Glass shared with everyone a few stories and did a GREAT JOB. He and his wife went on the Tuesday night runs with LOH. He will be missed. A few of us went to his funeral and the church was standing room only and they had his bike there. Tom Glass shared with everyone a few stories and did a GREAT JOB.
George Fabian hit a moose while riding his bike on Nordale Rd on September 31 and broke his right leg in five places, broke ribs, sore back and has a black eye. Hurry and get better George. We miss you and Gayla at our meetings.

Doug Chambers from the Outpost is our new Membership Officer. Welcome aboard Doug.

Taber from BB/BS was at our last meeting to pick up the $2500 donation check from HOG and I took a group picture with her. Launa from Breast Cancer Detection Center couldn't make it to pick up their check so it was mailed.

Our Halloween HOG Bingo game is coming up so wear you costumes and bring lots of money for a good time. Dinner at 6PM is $5 for all you can eat (Chili, cornbread and dessert) and drinks (water, soda) are $1. Games at 7PM and packets are $12 for 16 games and you can purchase more. No kids under 13 can play. Kids 13-18 can play but parents have to say Bingo and claim their prize. Having a brown bag auction and bids start out at $5. Prizes for best costumes and for Bingo winners. No cash give away. Money goes towards fuel and electric bill and to purchase turkeys for our food baskets. LOTS of fun. Please come! Call Rhonda at 488-5802 and leave a message if you're planning on coming or e-mail me at rhanks77@yahoo.com.

There will be a Sale at the Outpost on Dec. 9 from 6-8:30. They have lots of new items in the shop now so go Christmas shopping now before their gone. There will more information about Dec. 9 later.

The Christmas party is coming up sooner than we think. It's at the Regency on December 18 at 6PM, dinner at 7P. The tickets are $20 each and will go on sell at the Outpost soon. Jimmy has more information and room rates.

The winner for the $50 Outpost certificate was Scott Deal, the $10 membership pot went to Steve Schmitz and he put it back for the nest one and the 50/50 went to Joe Villa. It was $60 and he gave it back to be donated to Ron Desrochers' family. Thank you Joe. The HOG group gave the Desrochers $50, the other half of 50/50 and with Joe Villa's 50/50 we were able to send $170.

Last of all….I'm resigning my position as Assistant Director as of Dec. 31, 2004. I will miss sending messages to everyone and writing in the swineline. You are all wonderful people and I love you all. HOG is my family.
Later, Rhonda Procell

SECRETARY - Lori Price

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

Ridin' with Rich

The seasons are defiantly changing and we're all going to be changing gears here. The bikes are all put up for the winter and we're stuck back in the cages till spring. As I'm writing this, we still haven't had a really good "Dingus in the Ditch Day." Dingus in the Ditch Day? You know the first good snow/ice storm when all those folks who think 55 means 80 and they should always be able to drive like that. At least until the rice rocket, SUV, pickup or whatever starts going down the road sideways, backward and headed in directions that were totally unexpected and un-commanded. Dingus in the ditch.
The first thing you need to do is be sure your transportation is ready. Tires in good shape? Now is the time to get the snow tires on not two weeks after it snows. Ice scraper/snow brush handy? Oh yes don't depend on the wind to blow the snow off your car. It will blind the guy behind you. Take a minute, don't be rude.
Then remember you need to get used to driving on this stuff again. SLOW DOWN, don't do anything sudden, do your best to drive smoothly. The brakes are not your friends, use them sparingly. For those of you who have been to an experienced rider class what they teach about traction management is just as important in a four-wheeled vehicle. You only have so much traction and it takes traction to steer, brake, and accelerate. If your trying to do two of these at once you have to divide your traction by two. In any situation you will have brake and steer less if your going to make it.
It's just as well you slow down so you won't be forced into trying to decide what's more important while your trying to retain control. Leave early and let the Dingus pass. You'll be the one who will get where your going in one piece while the Dingus is in the ditch.

What's Happening This Month- Jimmy King

Well next year, like it is going to be an excellent year for the HOG group. I intend to plansome rides at least once a week, probably on Saturday and hopefully a couple of overnight rides , if we can get some support. I personally didn't get to ride much last year, due to the fact thatwas selling raffle tickets every weekend. If you have any ideas on some events letme know.

The room rates for the Holiday party are going to be $49.00 for a regular room, $59.00 for a whirlpool room, and $119.00 for a suite, these ratesa continental breakfast. The party is at the Regency motel (same place as last year) on Decth and the price is going to be $20.00. The Social Hour starts at 6:00, dinner is at 7:00. The tickets went on sale at the Outpost on Monday, the 18th of Oct.

If you have any questions, you can contact me at # jking@gci.net or 372-2791

Computers have diminished in price to the point where software is a large part of the cost. You can buy a desktop computer (less monitor & shipping) for $250.00 to $300.00. The rest of the cost is software. With the advent of Linux and the Open Software Foundation, you can outfit your computer with all the software you need for free and interesting enough, many of the software programs written for Linux have versions that run on Windows. I will attempt to review one cross platform software program in each copy of the newsletter so the windows users can sample what Linux software is like.

First as mentioned in past issues, the best browser and mail program for security and usability are FIREFOX and THUNDERBIRD

For this month, let me recommend a replacement for Microsoft Office and save you $400 to $500. The software, written by Sun Microsystems is called OPEN OFFICE. There is a commercial version called StarOffice, but I see no reason to pay for it.
http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.3/index.html

Like Microsoft Office, OpenOffice is a suite of programs. Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation, etc. The applications are quite similar in look and feel. Menu items can be worded differently and location is not necessary the same. An aggravation, for sure, when starting out, but not overwhelming. When you save your work, you have the option to save files in Microsoft native formats. i.e.: .doc .exe, etc, making sharing files with others, seamless. There are problems with elaborate documents. Word files containing complex tables and unique fonts. Excel files containing macros, etc. These problems continue to disappear as OpenOffice evolves, but for
those who need to share complex documents on a regular basis, you may want to wait another year.

For the rest of you, give it a try. After all, ya can't beat the price -
It's FREE
