First, let me start by saying thanks to all who made this year's bike show one of the best ever. A special thanks to those who went above and beyond selling tickets: Walt, Rhonda, Hoppy, Mike, Glen, Jim, Randy, Danette, Tamara, Richard, Freddy and Jerry. And thanks to all of those who gave these folks a break. It was well appreciated.

Now that spring is here, don't forget about clean up day, May 6th, at the Knotty Shop. The clean up will be followed by our first road rally. The Tangle Lakes ride is just around the corner. Make your reservations early. Chatinika is our first big ride and our 10th anniversary as a Chapter. To Al and Sandy Woodward, we would all like to thank you and recognize you as our charter members. Thanks for getting us started.

Ride hard and safe.
Mike.

Secretary

Thanks to all our new members who showed up at our last meeting. It was really great to see you. I hope to see more of you at our future events.

Congratulations to all the winners of this year's bike show. Everyone did a great job. All the bikes looked great, and the fashion show was a hit. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Thanks to Danette, Kathy, Fred, and all the volunteers for your hard work on the Easter Egg Hunt. I hope everyone had a happy Easter.

It was great to see a few die-hards out for a last minute "Thursday Night Ride" on April 13th. The day was beautiful, and the ride was great!

I would like to welcome our new chapter members: Dan Ackerman, James Betts, Steve Brice, Scott Deal, Kevin Galbreath, Rusty Haile, Bryan Haines, Charles Schott, Griz Smith, Larry Smith.

The following chapter members are due to renew this month: Doug Bauer, Walt Brennan, Lora Buntzman, Kristy Darr, Beverly Daugherty, Ton Desrochers, Bob Giabbai, Thomas Gollwitzer, Bonnie Gunn, Everett Harrison, John Huber, Brad Simanski, Bob Spear, Scott Stewart, Ken Warner, Douglas Wridge.

Please make sure to have your national H.O.G. membership card with you when you renew. You can renew with the girls at the shop, myself, or Dottie, our Treasurer.

Just a short one this month. I've been very busy this month, breaking in Nancy's Sportster, getting it ready for the show, and helping Chris with his new old dirt bike. It's beginning to look like a bike shop around here.

I've been seeing a lot of road killed rabbits and squirrels lately. They're also crossing the roads in the middle of the day. Now, even a small animal like a squirrel can upset a bike if your not ready, or if you take evasive action that puts you in the ditch, or into the front of that truck. Always be thinking about where you would go if something runs out in front of you. Or, if it's small, fast, and unexpected, be ready to just run over it. If you're riding on midsets or footboards, stand on the pegs with a little bend in your knees, and pull back on the bars. If your riding forward sets, pull back on the bars hard. Try to lift your butt off the seat. The idea with this is to lighten the front wheel so the steering won't be thrown off when you hit the bump, and to allow the bike to rock over the bump without you coming out of the seat. This is an old dirt bike trick that works well on street bikes too.

Ol Joe Says: Don't go cheap on the goggles. If your goggles (windshield, sunglasses, whatever) get scratched up and your riding into a low sun you can't see nothin'. Throw 'em out and get new ones.

Ladies of Harley

Spring is here and there are lots of bikes showing up on the roads. We made it through another winter.

The bike show last weekend was lots of fun. Good ticket sales.

My goal is to get more women on the road this summer than men. Look out guys. We are right behind you, but not for long. It might only be a little while before all you see of us is our.... backs.

I'd like to thank Danette Kane for opening up her home to LOH to color Easter eggs for the annual HOG Easter Egg Hunt. Thanks also to Connie Larranaga and Tamara Spear for their artistic ability to color eggs and make cute little Easter baskets. Thank you, Kiana (my daughter) for hanging out with her boring mom. With Connie's newfound talent at coloring eggs, Joe better watch out. How many ways can you use a boiled egg? Does that mean Joe will be bringing up the rear of the rides?

Ladies, it's not too late to participate in the LOH activity at Team-Cutters. Due to family matters, the activity scheduled for April 25th was canceled, but it will be rescheduled a little later this spring. Our thoughts are with you, Maria. I want to express again that LOH activities are for all the LOH's and not just those who have their own bikes. These get-togethers are for all the ladies. You can drive a car, truck, horse, fly, just don't hitch hike. Call someone else and get a ride if you need to.

The LOH Tuesday evening rides are starting May 2nd from the Harley shop at 7:00. We will leave right at 7:00. Come a little early, so you will have time to sign up on the ride sheet that is kept at the front desk of the shop. Partners are welcome. I noticed last Thursday; we need to get more Ladies going on the Thursday evening ride. Before we know it, the guys will think we can't keep up. That's all for now.

Kathy

Road Captain Report

Hello Riders,

We had our first Thursday night ride, and I personally felt it went very well. There were 17 bikes and 21 riders. Like the spring Geese, even Chicken Joe found his way home. Welcome home old timer, we missed you.

I would like to say how pleased I was at the excellent way all the riders rode in formation. We lost Joe Larranaga due to a rotating turn signal. With a little help from not one, but five bikes that stopped with him, they got him back on the rode and caught up with the main group. The Midway food was good as usual, but the speed at serving could improve a little. I won't complain, though. When twenty-one people emerge on a cafe like that, they did a bang up job keeping us happy.

The ride was good, and folks, there wasn't one rider that didn't blow a few cob webs out of the OLE pipes coming back. Bragging rights have to go to Steve McAnally. The money he invested in his FXDWG blew my faring right off the frame. Steve, that's one sweet machine. Of course, we are referring to the beauty and styling of the accessories he has added to his ride. The new bike owners that rode with the group rode so well I couldn't tell who they where. Rides like this one make it nice to ride among friends. Thanks to all of you for making the reason we ride so worthwhile.

On a safety note, always remember that when you ride in a staggered formation, keep the bike in front of you at a safe distance. That can be easily judged by this simple rule of thumb. If you can see the rider in front of you in his mirror than he or she can safely see you. It's a face to face method. So, always enjoy your rides and have a great time.

See you on the black top.
Thomas Mcghee

Editor's Desk

Rolling home from Midway Thursday night, heavy throttle in hand, I was enjoying a light traffic, laid back ride. Only several blocks from the house, I scooted off Mitchell onto Lathrup and noticed a car edging out of a side street. The driver was looking towards town, so I started to slow down. In the next instant, the driver started across my path, executing a left-hand turn. The squeal of my rear tire drew the driver's attention and came to a halt, blocking one and one half of the available two northbound lanes. I passed within a foot of their front bumper. If the driver had not stopped, I would have t-boned the car. Not serious enough to cause personal injury, but it would have done damage to the bike and the car. If the incident would have resulted in an accident, liability probably would have fallen on the driver of the car. Truth be known, my driving was appropriate for Mitchell, but not for Lathrup. Alas, it takes two to tangle. I am convinced that tires squealing on the pavement are more effective than any horn made. Hopefully, that was my close call for the season.

From the Outpost:

It's time for the 17th Annual Chatanika Run on Sunday, May 21st. It is open to all motorcycles. Let's start spreading the word, so we can bring Ronnie & Shirley a crowd. We will be heading out around 11:00 a.m. with coffee and donuts starting a 10:00 a.m.

On Saturday, May 20th, we will be celebrating the ten-year reunion of our local hog chapter. We will be having lots of great events and a sale everyone keeps asking us about. The girls will be having a 20% storewide sale (excluding logo items). So, come on down and join us.

The Bentley Mall show was a great success. It always seems to pull a great group of people together. We would like to thank all the people that helped put the show together, and a special thanks to the following people:

You may have noticed a few new faces working out front along with Jessie & Autumn. Most of you probably know Connie Larranaga. She was introduced at the last Hog meeting. Shea Woollmann started in April, so if you haven't had an opportunity to introduce yourself to the two ladies, come by and say Hi!

The girls out front just had a delivery of new spring items. Summer shirts and tanks have arrived, along with logo mugs, shot-glasses, and new bandannas.

The road guide promotion has ended. We had a lot of sales, and it ended before the May 15th deadline. Thank you, everyone.

If you missed the chance to see the new kids items at the Bentley Mall fashion show, stop by to check them out. We have spring dresses for the girls and jerseys for the boys, along with rain jackets for both.

Now that we are all out riding and the weather is still a bit chilly, don't forget about our heated riding gear, both jackets and gloves.

If you have been collecting Barbie for the last few years, her Fatboy Harley has arrived. The girls have a limited supply, and they will be going fast. The price is $110.00 each.

Parts:
Hello everyone,

I don't think I have seen my accessory walls empty so fast. With all the springtime fix em up, and the show, I've been ordering like crazy. If you know you're going to do a springtime project, please let me know ahead, so I can be sure to have everything you need. I've stocked all the essential cleaning and polishing products, so don't hesitate to stop by and pick up what you need to make your ride shine.

We have some new products worth mentioning. Security alarm systems, and boy are they hot. A few riders have had me bring in cruise controls for the FXD and Softail models. And have you ever caught your foot under your brake pedal between the floorboard? Well, the answer can be found in the Thunderpress. If you want to beef up the motor a little, I have the cams, air breathers, and exhaust you need to keep the pace. So, come see me, and we'll do all we can to help you set up the ride of your dreams.

Thomas

Chicken Joe

Well boys and girls, here it is my last Road Report of the winter season. I have finely made it back to North Pole from perpetual summer, and what did I find, WINTER! I wonder how you folks ride in this cold weather. I have been in the desert all winter. It is tough, but someone has to do it. I figure it may as well be me.

I made the Louisiana State HOG Rally. It was nice, but nothing to write home about. This year, the police allowed the parade. It was rather funny to see all the police in Shreveport blocking the intersections for around 3500 bikers. The parade closed down that town for a few hours. After observing their rally this year, I came to the conclusion that it was no better than the Alaska State HOG Rally you guys put on last year. In some respects, it was not as good. Seems planning has a lot to do with it, right?

I had spent some time with Fae Shepard, while she is in Houston. She is feeling okay, but some of the new drugs are not working. She is back to the old chemotherapy that has made all her hair fall out. We did ride while there, and we looked rather funny going down the road. Me, with my long hair, and her, with no hair. She has a hat that states, "I'm having a no hair day." Her spirits are up, though, and when we get her bike down to her she will be doing much better, according to the doctors.

I hit the road around April 1. Headed west, until I hit the ocean, then turned right. Made a stop over in Sierra Vista to visit with Dave and Amber, Ebe and Connie, and Lenna. Fred was out driving 18-wheelers. All the family there said to tell you guys Hi, and, if you are coming down this summer, to be sure and come by for a stay. Well, they told me the stay has to be really short. Wonder if I wore out my welcome? Also, they are all going to Sturgis this summer. If you want to hook up with them, meet them in Belle Fourche.

Everything was going great. The weather was wonderful, except through the 97-degree desert. The bike was running wonderfully well, until I got to Seattle to drop off my bird, Sydney. I'll bet you guessed it. I broke down for the 6th time and the 4th tow job. This time the stator fried. My Ultra has broken down so many times I just expect it now, and do not get upset. I figure it is teaching me patience. I trailered back from Washington, which I am glad I did because I ran into snow on the road west of Watson Lake, and again in Dot Lake.

I have made it home and was able to make the first dinner run. Was good to see you guys, even though I do not know a lot of you new folks. I feel like an outsider because of so many of you. It was really great to see so many riders. Now, Thomas led the run to Midway Lodge, and I cannot believe it, he actually rode below 90 MPH. Actually, he rode below 60 MPH. Wonder if he was sick or something. Summer should be exciting around here. Heard about all the things planned. I know it will be a great time to be here.

I will be at the Denali Outlet Store, again this summer, so you guys have a great time and visit when you can.

God Bless
Chicken Joe
