From the Director

Well gang, we're getting so close to riding I can feel the wind blowing in my face. There is a lot happening this month and I hope to see many of you come out of hibernation and join the festivities. We gave out some fine recognition awards at the February meeting and still have a few to give out. Cindy and John Haddad received a nice wall hanging from the group for their past and continued support of H.O.G. John reciprocated by pitching in a $50.00 gift certificate to be given away at every membership meeting this year. Now, that alone should be incentive enough to come out once a month and visit with some of your old riding buds. We are rolling along with the raffle and tickets will be available at the Bentley Mall Bike Show on the 27th and 28th. I have ordered what I consider some pretty good looking trophies for the show so bring your scooter out to the mall on Friday night the 26th and set up your display. The show is also a great opportunity to sell some raffle tickets so if you can spare an hour or two please call Jimmy King, your activities director, and sign up for a slot. Rhonda has set up an Easter egg hunt for the youngsters at the Salcha Senior Center on the weekend before Easter so if you can lend a hand with anything please contact her. In the next few weeks, when the temperature hits the 40's, we are all going to be itching to get the iron on the pavement. Our wonderful D.O.T. put out tons of gravel this winter and it's as bad as ice so please be careful! Hope to see you on the road soon. Ride safe and ride free!

Assistant Director - Rhonda

Hi everyone, As you all know the bike show is coming up very soon (March 27-28) and we are still trying to get people to show their bikes. So please sign up. Need volunteers to sell raffle tickets at the mall and Carlson center both days. We also need volunteers to help sell raffle tickets from now until the Golden Days parade in July. There will be three prizes to give away this year instead of just a bike, which makes it more tempting to buy a ticket. We really need your help. Jimmy is setting up places and times to sell tickets and will let you know. If you have ideas about places or businesses to sell tickets just let Jimmy (activities' director) know. We have a wonderful board this year who is really working hard to make this year fun for all. For all those who have backed off attending meeting or activities for any reason; WE MISS YOU AND WANT YOU BACK! You make HOG what it is! I will be needing the LOH to help out this year at different activities with making dishes like they have in the past. Our Easter BBQ is April 3 at noon in Salcha at the senior center. Bring your kids, grand kids, nieces, nephew, grab the neighbors' kids or come alone. Need LOH to bring a dish. Let me know if you can help. (488-5802 or e-mail me). We will have four groups looking for eggs (0-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16 to adults). There will be prizes for finding the winning eggs. Looking for plastic eggs to fill with candy. I'm still selling raffle tickets (afghan my mother made) for .50 cents each. The money helps the seniors buy new tables and chairs. Need not be present too win and the drawing is held at our HOG bingo game which is April 24 at 4:00 pm. The cost is $12.50 each for a game packet (about 16 games) and $5.00 each for spaghetti dinner. We had a great turnout in November and a lot of fun. You will win non-cash prizes. I am working on getting a shelf to put our photo albums on at the Harley shop. I should have it within the next couple weeks. If anyone has pictures to put up on the wall at the shop just get a hold of me. If anyone is looking for a great time soaking in the hot sun, then join us on a Harley cruise from November 6-13. Just log onto www.hogsonthehighseas.com. Has lots of information and pictures. First time for Alaska group to attend. Sign up under North Pole, AK and eat dinner at 8:30pm with our group. There is about 14-16 from here attending so far. See you at the next meeting.

SECRETARY - Lori Price

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

LOH - Vacant

If any ladies are interested in heading up the Ladies of Harley or in being a LOH road captain please contact the director.

The Editor's Desk - Cindy Gollwitzer

Members who receive the Swine-Line through the mail and would like to begin receiving an e-mail version are asked to forward their e-mail address to me at c.gollwitzer1@gci.net. In addition to cutting down on the newsletter mailing costs members who request e-mail distribution will receive monthly activities updates when available. The deadline for submissions to be included in the Swineline is the 15th of the month.

Ridin' with Rich

April at last! Now this is a motorcycle club, isn't it? Gad it's been so long I'd almost forgot. There lies the problem. We have been off the bikes now long enough that we're all out of practice. On top of that there are the usual springtime hazards to worry about. Let's do a little review.
The good folks at DOT have been putting gravel on the intersections, on ramps, and hills all winter. Now with the thaw everything they have put down over the winter will be ready to bite you. Slow down early, keep the bike as upright as possible and be easy on the brakes. That stuff will accumulate in the outsides of curves so be cautious, try to stay away from that white line until they have swept the roads. That may take a while so be careful.
Watch out for shady spots on the north sides of hills. The road surface will be slow to warm up and there could be ice in places where water is running across the road. Wet ice is about as slick as anything can possibly be, so be extremely careful if you see what looks like water. There could be ice under it.
Fools in cars, they are bad enough in the middle of summer for not seeing motorcycles. They haven't seen a bike on the road since October so they are NOT looking for us. That means you have to be doubly careful.
You've heard it from me before but I'm going to keep repeating myself. Go find an empty parking lot and practice some quick stops and tight turns. You haven't been on that bike in a long time either and it will never hurt to brush up on the basics after a long layoff. Some of you have brand-new bikes (Scotty) and need to get a feel for them. It won't hurt now and it may save some hurt later.
Finally remember to dress warm. It might feel warm in the sun but it will cool off fast when you get rolling.

By the way we're still looking for Road Captains. If you would like to be a Road Captain contact me at oldiron@mosquitonet.com or 488-1728.

Message from John Haddad

Greetings and A Birthday Party Invite From The Outpost

I would like to take this opportunity to say "hello", and remind everyone that winter is almost over and the riding season is once again ready to start. Do you need any parts installed on your Harley? Does your Harley need service? Is your battery fully charged and ready to fire up for that first ride or will you be kicking the tires? You need to be asking yourself these questions this time of year. Give Clark or Jerry a call for all your service needs. Remember that we have plenty of time available now but those pesky travelers have a way of jamming up the service shop come May.

I would also like to mention that our new Board of Directors is doing a fine job but they need your support. To enhance meeting participation, The Outpost has added a little incentive to come on out and see what's happening. Every meeting there will be a $50.00 gift certificate given to the winner of the 50/50 drawing, starting at the next meeting. Remember, you can't win if you do not attend.

I would also like to talk about Hog Memberships. As an incentive to get existing members renewing memberships and to promote new memberships, The Outpost will donate $10.00 per member (old or new) to the Hog Group for members signed up from now through April 30th. So, if you haven't signed up or know someone who is dragging their feet, get on down to The Outpost and pay your dues. The club will benefit from it!

Now for the good stuff, we want to invite everyone to the Fairbanks Hog Chapters 14th Anniversary!

We here at The Outpost appreciate all the support this chapter has given us over the last three and half years. We look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the near future, and hope your winter has been good and your riding season is even better.

Sincerely,

Chris Chambers President

Mark,

Tammy, HOG's Team Manager here. Thank so much for attending the other day.
The Dipper manager advised us there were about 350 people in attendance and almost all for us. I will let you know how they do at the Bush Tournament in Glennallen too. We were the only Fbks team asked to attend the Bush Tournament. The boys are excited. My husband, Coach Pat has had that honor for the last few years. It is because of sponsors like the Harley Owner's Group that made it possible for us to have the opportunity to work with a group of boys, mold a team, and represent the community in a positive way. We have chosen to also thank you publicly. Please have the HOG members check out their Sunday paper this week for the teams way of sending a personal thank you. (It was paid for by the coach - not FAHA)

Thanks Again,
Tammy
H.O.G's Manager

New Virus Issues

First, I think the web is the greatest tool that was ever offered to this world. To be able to reasearch any topic with the click of a mouse is an option without comparison. We live in a great time - unlimited information with no central controls. As with all media, this will diminish over time. It's in process as we speak. Daily, sites are adding log-in's for access to information. Although, currently free, they won't remain that way for long. Such is the way of the world - but I digress...

Two new virus threats made me sit up and take notice. The first allows infection by just viewing an email. You no longer have to open an attachment. Three ways around this: First, use a browser other than Internet Explorer and a mail program other than Microsoft. Second, make sure your copy of windows has all the current patches. Third, turn off HTML in your mail program (use plain text). My choice is the first, for many reasons, but primarily because I am tired of patching windows three times a month. (and some patches cause more problems than fixes).

The second new virus threat is really nasty. It overwrites information on your hard drive until the system crashes. Since it wipes out infected systems, it appears to be killing itself. Best anyone knows, infection appears to be tied to Internet Relay Chat. The virus resides in memory so most anti-virus programs won't catch it, but just by turning off the computer, it goes away.

Safe Surfing

Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.

Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter. Another new option for mail is Thunderbird. It can be found on the same site as Firebird. I am currently experimenting with Thunderbird and will offer an update next month.

http://www.pmail.com/

I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/

Mozilla Firebird is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
