From the Director

Well folks, here it is the middle of June already! Why do our summers have to fly by so fast? It feels like we just got to this point and in a few days we will start losing light again. On the up side, the rally is just a week or so away. I attached the picture of Kim and I at last years rally only as a reminder of how great our weather was for those three days. Let's see if Anchorage can compete with that! Whatever the weather is like, I hope to see you all in Palmer for what always is a memorable time. We only have a month to sell raffle tickets so if you still have some please try and get them sold and get the money to Jimmy King so we can see where we stand. The raffle bike is at the outpost getting prepped and we will have it out and about at various locations almost every weekend. I did not receive any interest in a float this year so the plan is to just pull the raffle bike on a trailer behind the raffle 4-wheeler and have H.O.G. members walk the parade route selling tickets. Hopefully everyone is having a good riding season and as always, I welcome any suggestions or comments. Ride safe and ride free. Raven

Assistant Director - Rhonda

Hi everyone! Aren't you just lovin this weather? I know I am, but those darn mosquitos are bad this year. First the bad news, my dear friend Jim Kinnel (HOG member) passed away on June 16th after hitting the back end of a dump truck while riding his new bike. I have spent the last week helping his daughter and ex-wife sell all his belongings. We then took a day off and I took them to Denali Park and Skinny Dicks for some fresh air and laughs. Thanks to all who attended the garage sale and especially Hozer for buying the 4 wheeler and selling yours to me. I made a mistake in the last Swineline. The HOG members raised $1,300 for the seniors and not $3000. I missed the Chatanika Run but heard everyone had a great time. I did attend the Meet in the Middle at the Grizzly Bear campground and the Veterans Memorial Run. You should have seen us Saturday night standing under a covered shed shootin the breeze, eating, drinking and having fun with the Anchorage group. We looked like a can of sardines under there and it rained real hard that night. Sunday after eating breakfast, Joe and I went on the Memorial Run where we met up with Pat and Cathy Comeau and the Anchorage group. It was such a beautiful ride there. The parade of bikes riding around the army helicopter was so cool and that is where we met up with Mark Boberick. They had a gentleman there from World War II and after he told us a story about what he saw during that war, I looked around and didn't see a dry eye. Afterwards we went on to Trapper Creek for a free BBQ. Not only did I eat there; I also sold raffle tickets. Then Joe, Mark and I rode back to the campground. As always Mike R, Walt and Brandi S, Kent and Barb J, Joe and Deb V, Becky, Jesse and Cajun Joe put on a great feast all weekend with lots of different foods. It was good to see Maria and Nelda there to. Nelda rode her own bike there and back. I was so happy for her. I had so much fun taking pictures and watching everyone have such a great time together. We could not have asked for better weather for our ride home and everyone got home safe. The last HOG meeting at the Howling Dog was a good turn out even though we had to stand out side and fight the mosquitos. Your names were put on a piece a paper and added to the HOG jar. After the HOG meeting a lot of us went over to Kent and Barb Johnson's where they were having a get together and BBQ for Mike Reardean who was leaving for Qatar or somewhere that it is real hot. Hopefully, he will be home in September. It was a great turn out and we had a group picture. He says he wants us all at the airport when he comes home. Mario Pavia is there also and it would be nice to meet him at the airport too. I will be keeping in contact with them and will let you all know when they will be home. Karrie Schroder my riding buddy is in Baghdad and says Hello to everyone. Hey Brad, Joe and I miss you both and all the good times we had. The rally is coming up soon and I know a lot of people are going and will have a great time so ride safe and Cajun Joe and myself will see you all there.

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

Ridin' with Rich

What was that?
Do you find yourself asking that question more and more often these days? How about buzzing or ringing after you get off the bike. Ever get a feeling like cotton in your ears? You're heading for a hearing loss. As a matter of fact if you get the cotton in the ears feeling you need to get to a doctor and soon.
Loud pipes or not, an hour at road speed exceeds the OSHA allowable standard for an eight-hour exposure for noise. Just the wind noise at 55 mph is enough to damage your hearing. Most of us will spend a lot more than an hour on the bike on a sunny afternoon. What to do?
This question came up a while back on one of the web rings I frequent. Several riders have related that they wear earplugs while riding. I have noticed a few of our own members wearing earplugs while riding. After checking I've found nothing that would prevent you from legally wearing plugs in Alaska or many other states.
So what do I look for in earplugs? The cheapest and some of the easiest to use are the yellow or orange foam plugs that are available in most gun shops and shooting supply departments. I have been using those plugs for years at work and when shooting. The only thing with them is a lot of people don't insert them properly. You need to roll them between your fingers, then reach over your head, grab your ear and pull up on it while inserting the plug. Just poking in the outside of your ear isn't going to do very much.
The next type are the rubber plugs some with valves in them meant for shooters. The rubber plugs are fine but avoid the ones with the valves. The valves are meant for gunfire not sustained noise like you get on a bike. There are rubber plugs that have to be fitted by a doctor or audiologist that are nice to have but a bit difficult to find.
Finally there are custom molded silicon plugs favored by shooters. They are very comfortable and are the most effective at blocking noise. If you watch for the gun shows there are people, who will make them for you at those shows. They are more expensive but the difference in comfort make them worth the money.
So if you would like to preserve your hearing consider wearing earplugs while riding.

What's Happening This Month- Jimmy King

Well June is here and the weather is great , the event schedule for June and July is out , so everyone read it , and pay close attention to ticket sale dates, we need help selling tickets, also if you have tickets out I need the money back ASAP. Also, just a reminder local ride times are posted on the schedule , and when everyone meets to ride put your heads together and plan a destination to ride to. the State rally is at the end of the month , and I'm putting together an overnite ride to the Chatnika Lodge at the end of July. Ron said we can camp for free, and he would barbecue for us. As always, any help on planning some events and rides is appreciated

A new E-mail program - Thunderbird!

This is good. I've used it for a couple of months with no problems. After 3-4 years of few software inovations, It's great to see competition start to re-establish itself. Options are a wonderful thing. They insure advancement. Without healthy competion, we would all still be using DOS.

Linux is going great guns! Sam's is selling a Red Hat machine for around $300. The OS is maturing quickly and becomming more user friendly. I picked one up, brought it home, plugged it into the network, and in 30 minutes was online, had access to the rest of the network, and was able to share windows printers. Be aware though, if things go wrong, you still have to be a "bit of a geek" to find and fix the problems. For those of you who are adventures, It's a good time to learn about the future, but for mainstream users, I'd give it another 2-3 years before making the change.

Back to Thunderbird:

Reclaim your e-mail—you're in control now! (great spam filters)
Smartest Way to Stop Junk Mail

Thunderbird provides the most effective tools for detecting junk mail. Our tools analyze your e-mail, and identifies those that are most likely to be junk. You can automatically have your junk mail deleted or you can put in a folder you specify, just in case you like reading junk mail.

View your e-mail the way you want it. Access your e-mail with Thunderbird's new three-column view. Customize your toolbar, change its look with themes, and use Mail Views to quickly sort through your e-mail.

Thunderbird provides enterprise and government grade security features such as S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, support for certificates and security devices.

Thunderbird gives you IMAP/POP support, support for HTML mail, labels, quick search, smart addressbook, return receipts, advanced message filtering, LDAP address completion, import tools, powerful search, and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.

Thunderbird lets you add additional features as you need them through extensions. Extensions are a powerful tool to help you build a mail client that meets your specific needs.

This software may work well enough to be relied upon as your primary messaging client as it is based off a stable Mozilla 1.6 architecture. However, Mozilla Thunderbird is still a preview release, and therefore several features may not be complete.

Safe Surfing

Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.

Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter. Another new option for mail is Thunderbird. It can be found on the same site as Firebird. I am currently experimenting with Thunderbird and will offer an update next month.

http://www.pmail.com/

I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/

Mozilla Firefox (new name, same program) is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
