Hello from Alabama. We are doing the family vacationing. Hope you all are enjoying all the riding activities. I would really like to thank everyone who was at the last meeting. You guys were really great! Your consideration helped me to be able to run our last meeting so smoothly. I hope this keeps up. The meeting went quickly, so everyone had time to visit & enjoy each other's company. Thanks again.
I would like to welcome our new chapter members: Greg Brandenburg, Bill Boyle, Robert Fedash, John & Tonya Freeman, Duke Green, Christie & Darren Johnson, Kent Johnson, Kim Sandborg, Brandi Schader, Kimberly & Steve Schmitz, Randal & Sue Smith, John Ulrich, Holly & Jimmy Vance, Dale Walker.
The following chapter members are due to renew: Paul Brinkman, Lew & Roberta Champlin, Fred Cox, Rhonda Hanks, Adrian Loeffelholz, Derek Macomber, Kristie & Shaun McNeal, Lori & Michael Mertes, Hoppy Mew, Darrell Needham, Mark & Wanda Newton, Robert Potter, Mike Reardean, Eric Yeager.
Don't forget you need to have your HOG national card present to renew. I need to make sure I have your card number & expiration date.
I would also like to thank Vicki Larsen for having Micheal Rogers, from Channel 11, come out to do a story on the Ladies of Harley. Thanks also to all the ladies who came out for the ride. If you did not catch the story, it was very good. Mr. Rogers seemed to have really enjoyed himself. Thanks to you men who came out for the ride. Remember that the rides are for everyone, and you don't have to ride. That night I drove, and really enjoyed myself. I got a chance to meet some new people, and we had a good time.
Keep the meetings short and smooth; enjoy the rest of the getting to know new people. See you in two weeks.
Evelyn Wood
Richard/Bill,
I have a suggestion for next month's Swine-Line.
In light of the fact that many of us will be setting out for Palmer in June,
perhaps many on their first "distance" ride", I thought it
might be helpful to write up an article on what tools we should have on
board when traveling, especially along those long lonely stretches of Alaska
roads. Actually, I would like to know myself.
Something different; I like different. This same question was asked of one of the writers for one of the national magazines a while back and I liked the short answer. " All you need on most modern Harleys is a credit card, cell phone, and a hand gun." Now the handgun I'll stay away from for the sake of political correctness, but the cell phone and the credit card would be good ideas for anyone. Take a note pad with the telephone numbers of the dealers along your route. Or better yet, your H.O.G. touring handbook. The other thing would be a first aid kit and the knowledge of what to do with it. A first aid and CPR course would benefit any rider or passenger.
Now with the basics out of the way, tools. The tools you carry should reflect your mechanical ability as well as the bike you ride. I used to carry a tool kit I could have changed a head gasket with. I knew how to change a head gasket and the bike I rode was prone to blow head gaskets. I don't carry that big a kit anymore because the bike I ride has proven to be as reliable as a sunrise. The only problems I've had with it were not things that would have left me along side the road. Tires wear out, brake pads and the like. Those things need to be checked when you do your scheduled maintenance, and the weekend before a long trip. The weekend before, so you'll have time to get anything fixed.
Now the basic tools. An inexpensive set of Allen wrenches. A magnetic
screwdriver that takes interchangeable bits. Bits for the screwdriver; straight
bit, #2 Phillips, #15 & #20 Torx. Six or eight inch vicegrips, and eight
or ten inch adjustable wrench. These would be the minimum I would travel
with. A spark plug socket, ratchet or "T" handle to turn it, a
½' and 9/16 socket. From here on, use your own judgment, but think
"what do I use when I work on my bike in the garage" and "what
will I be able to do on the side of the road".
Supplies, again there are some "have to have" and some "nice
to have". Have to have: cable ties or wire ties, electrical tape, safety
or bailing wire, spare spark plugs. If your bike has more than eighty thousand
miles and is still on the original drive belt, get one of the temporary
spares.
Thomas has put together some nice basic kits at a good price, or you can go to the neighborhood hardware store and put one together yourself. Remember space and weight are an issue, so think about everything carefully.
Finally Ol Joe says; If you do break down get as far off the road as
you can. Ride with a buddy and have them watch for traffic while you work.
If the traffic is to close get a tow. You don't want to be remembered as
a bug splat.

Update from the Road Captain,
Amazing and so impressive to see the largest Thursday night ride headed
out to Salcha River lodge last night. Donny Wood had the group all together
riding uniform and under control. It says a lot for the skill of all the
riders to work well together.
The lodge was ready willing and able to handle the large crowd. Josh Sasse and I rode out just ahead to assure the lodge of the great group of Hogs that were on their way.
To let everyone know, the HOG members have been invited to lead the North Pole Summer Festival parade. The board accepted the challenge and signed up to ride. For all those who want to ride and show off their bikes, the parade is June 10th. We will meet in the parking lot of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church at 10:30am. If you have any questions please contact me at the shop or home. We also will have a booth at the following festival to sell the raffle tickets for the bike. Please get with Jerry Culver to arrange helping with the booth. It's another great opportunity to push the sell of tickets and show the public who we are.
A reminder that on July 8th, the Road Captain crew will be holding their 2nd annual Barbecue ride after the summer highway clean up. Watch the HOG corner for details.
Keep up the great rides everyone. And for all that haven't been on the
Thursday night rides yet, you are really missing out on a good OLE time.
Enjoy your machines,
Thomas Mcghee
The weather, of late, reminds me more of Kodiak than Fairbanks. Hopefully, it will rain itself out and be bright and sunny for the State Rally.
Speaking of rallies. We held our first road rally. Ended up being a nice sunny day and the course covered just under one hundred miles. Chuck Schott ;and Rob Chambers secured first place, with 38 total points. Joe Larranaga grabbed second place, with 63 points, and Ron Desrockers and Bob Ball, with 90 points scored third place.
As everyone hopefully is aware, this is your newsletter. Any member that would like to submit an article for publication is welcome to do so. Articles for submission need to be placed in my drop at the Outpost or e-mailed to the address below no later than the 20th of the month.
As always, if there is a problem or you wish to change the way you receive your copy of The Swine-Line, call 458-7116 in the evening or e-mail: fbkhog@eagle.ptialaska.net
(Sorry for the mistakes. I find myself running about two days behind.)

We want to thank everyone for a great turn out for the 17th annual Chatanika
Run. Ronnie and Shirley always put on a great feast every year for us. The
games were a lot of fun, it is always a pleasure watching people with mustard
and ketchup smeared all over their faces.
I would also like to thank the volunteers that helped make the weekend all
possible. For the group that helped set-up the parking lot at Chatanika;
Jeff Akin, Darren Johnson, Freddy, & Poe, we appreciate it. Also, thank
you Tamara Spear, Laurie Chesser, and Karrie Schroeder for helping Saturday
with the coffee bar
Sales:
I've got good new and bad news. The bad news is that I received a memo
from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company stating that, due to manufacturing
difficulties, the 4.4 gallon gas tank for the XL1200 Custom will not be
part of the 2001 model year line. The good news is that I have about 3 more
new 2000, 1200 Sportsters available right now. (Not sure what the status
will be when you all receive this?) I'm also trying to bring in some late
model used bikes, depending on space availability. Right now I have a 97'
WideGlide (FXDWG) black & silver, low miles (6,877) with a few accessories
on the floor. So if you, or any of your friends want to ride a Harley this
summer, come down to the shop and see me. And also, we just got in the 2001
color chart for bikes. There is some new colors being offered as well as
3 new "Custom Paint" schemes available, during selected months,
on selected models. The "Sinister Blue" has been replaced with
"Luxury Blue", no more Aztec Orange. Two new solid colors being
introduced are "Red Teal" and "Jade Sunglo." For new
2-tones there is Concord Purple/Diamond Ice, Real Teal/Birch White, and
Luxury Blue/Diamond Ice. Not all color options are available on all models.
If you need to check them out- or just curious (which most of us are) stop
in and see Carrie or myself for a peek.

Motorclothes:
June is here, so that means "Rally Time." A sign up sheet will
be posted for everyone to designate dates, times, and groups leaving for
the ride to Palmer. With this information it will enable everyone to find
people to ride with safely to the rally.
Keep in mind the weather conditions could change drastically once you head over the mountains, so if you haven't got the right kind of gear for all types of weather conditions, stop by the shop and the girls will be glad to get you all geared up. They have a good stock of rain gear, goggles, warm gloves, and neck warmers available.
Remember dress in layers, you can always take them off! "If everyone is prepared the weather will probably be excellent."
The girls are prepared to let everyone know about the arrival of the Barbie #4 and Ken #2. They are expected to arrive sometime in June. They will be sold on a first come first serve basis. With the popularity of these items, we will not be holding them for later purchases.
Many of you have been interested in the new pan-optx goggles that the girls have on display. These goggles can have a prescription lens placed in them for a price! Jessie is only taking special orders on this item, which 25% down will be required. You get to pick the frame and lenses on these goggles. They really fit nice and if I had not already purchased my $100 dollar goggles last year, I'd pick me up a pair.
Parts:
With the riding season in full swing, special orders are hitting Harley from all around. So if there is something you think you will need to order for the summer, do so now. That is, if you want it before the snow falls!
Thomas
Service:
Clark says Erskin Diddle! A reminder to everyone to call ahead to schedule
an appointment. Thanks
Road Captain:
The potholes and frost heaves are showing up everywhere. Pay attention
to your road conditions because there are no warnings. The Thursday night
rides have all been great, and we are pleased at the number of members showing
up for the rides. If you are interested in riding in a group to the rally,
please let Thomas or the girls up front know when you are planning to leave.
Have a great ride and be safe.
Thomas
