From the Director

Well gang, here we are in the midst of the holiday season. We're midway through winter and, by now, all of us are ready to get back on two wheels. It's been a fantastic year and I wish for a better and brighter new year for each and every one of you. I hope the Harley Santa was good to all of you. As we spend this time with family and friends please keep our soldiers, sailors and airmen fighting for freedom in your thoughts and prayers. We have great things planned for the new year so come out to the meetings and see what's coming up. To all of you; Happy Holidays and as always ride safe and ride free.
Raven

Assistant Director/Safety Officer - Rich Barlow

Here we are starting a new year already. If I ever get my hands on whoever is stealing the pages off the calendar it's going to be ugly. I really don't have a whole lot to report right now. Jim Samuelson will be heading off soon to Rally Coordinator's training and there will be a lot going on there as soon as he returns.

I'd like to remind everybody to get his or her reservations for the pajama party/sleep over at Chatinika Lodge February 5th. Last years party was a hoot and a welcome brake from the mid-winter doldrums. Ronnie only has a few rooms so get your room reserved now at 907-389-2164.

Finally, we're not out of the woods yet when it comes to cold weather. Do you have a cold weather survival kit in your car? Especially the way I see some of the gals dress in cold weather just scares me. You need to have snow pants, pack boots, hat, parka, & heavy gloves real handy in case that car breaks down. That "career ware" won't keep you warm for nothing.

Carry a cell phone with numbers for towing companies, cabs, and other emergency assistance already programmed in. Most of us don't have a phone book with us so having that pre-programmed would be a big help in case of a problem.

Make sure your engine heaters are all working. It's been quite some time since we've had a prolonged bout of -40 and colder and if we have a cold snap we need to be certain our wheels won't leave us stranded.

Rich

SECRETARY - Lori Price

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

Computers have diminished in price to the point where software is a large part of the cost. You can buy a desktop computer (less monitor & shipping) for $250.00 to $300.00. The rest of the cost is software. With the advent of Linux and the Open Software Foundation, you can outfit your computer with all the software you need for free and interesting enough, many of the software programs written for Linux have versions that run on Windows. I will attempt to review one cross platform software program in each copy of the newsletter so the windows users can sample what Linux software is like.

How about expanding horizions for the new year. NVU is a free WUSWUG (what you see is what you get) HTML editor/page creator. If you have ever considered making web pages, this is a great way to start. Create a sub-directory on your hard drive, generate some pages, link them to one another, and load the start page into your browser. Vola! You have your own personal web site. If you find youself overwhelmed with the new terminology, grab a book on HTML. When I start a new adventure, I normally pick up one of those "Book for Dummy's". The check-out clerk sometimes chuckles, but the book always gets me going.
