Wow! I never thought I'd be sitting in this position. Thanks to all who voted for me. I'd like to say thanks again to Scott Deal and the rest of the outgoing board; you all did a fantastic job! We welcome your guidance in the future. I share a common trait with all members of this group; I love to ride motorcycles and my choice to ride is a Harley Davidson. I encourage and welcome all of you to come to meetings and help plan the coming year. My goals for this group are simple, let's have fun, lets do some good for the community, and lets ride a lot. This is your group, get involved and give your input. Ride safe and ride free.

First of all I would like to thank everyone that voted for me. The Christmas party was a blast and being able to see friends that I hadn't seen in a long time was great. After meeting with all the new board members at Steve's house the other night, and listening to all their ideas, I knew then that we had a great team. There were a lot of ideas given that night. We have things planned from February thru April so far, but we still need your ideas on how you would like us to make it a better year with lots of rides, fun, cookouts, camping and family gatherings. I won't be at our first meeting in Feb., I'm having surgery on the 3rd. You can still call and give me your ideas or just call and say hi. My phone number is 488-5802

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster.
All local members must be a member of national HOG before joining the local
HOG chapter. If you joined the local HOG chapter by completing an application
at the Shop, but did not become a national HOG member first, you need to
do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line
at http://www.hog.com. Each year national
HOG will send a renewal form to you so that you can renew your membership.
That is usually a reminder to pay your local dues. In the future, the
newsletter will list those local members who's memberships are close to
expiring. If you have questions, please contact Lori or Aleshia Purcell
at the Harley shop.

As the new editor of the Swine-Line, I am open to suggestions on what you would like to see in the newsletter. I will make a serious effort to make sure all club members receive the newsletter, either by e-mail or via the U.S. Post Office. Members who receive the Swine-Line through the mail and would like to begin receiving an e-mail version are asked to forward their e-mail address to Cindy Gollwitzer at c.gollwitzer1@gci.net. In addition to cutting down on the newsletter mailing costs, members who request e-mail distribution will receive mid-month activities updates.

I'm baaack . . . For those of you who are new to the chapter, I'm Rich Barlow and I'll be your Safety officer on this ride. Steve asked me to take safety again, so here we go again. I did this job for three years then took over the editor's duties for a couple years, followed by a brief stint as Activities officer. I will try to keep this column fairly light and readable. I have had to read to much dry, technical safety material through the years and hated every minute of it. I would like to pass along some of what I've learned along the way and have people read this. I'm going to try to keep everybody out of trouble and rob the shop of body work business (Sorry guys). February is light on motorcycle mileage but we can still use the defensive driving techniques we use on our bikes to keep ourselves out of trouble in our cars & trucks. The fool that will make the left turns in front of you on your bike will do the same thing while you're in your car. They will pull out in front of you and not be able to get up to speed because of the ice on the roads. Just remember that idiot isn't any less an idiot because it's winter. As a matter of fact they're probably even more so. Look through the curves, be ready for the car at the intersection to do the wrong thing & slow down, the brake is not your friend. To close, we are in need of road captains for the upcoming season. If you might be interested in being a road captain, contact me at or 488-1728 . We will be training new road captains in group riding, first aid and CPR, for those who don't have that certification already. I'll be organizing those classes when I get some volunteers and we don't have much time before April gets here.

Hello ! 'm Jimmy King, your new activities director for the HOG. My family and I arrived here from South Carolina three months ago. I'm in the Air Guard at Eielson AFB. I'm looking forward to a very active and exciting year with all our new friends and members of HOG. I would love to hear from everyone on ideas and activities they would like to see happen this year. Just send the emails to jking@gci.net !! I'm ready and waiting !! Keep busy and ride safe and often!!!!. The event for February is bowling for Big Brothers, Big Sisters. HOG will be bowling on Saturday Feb 14 at the Nugget Lanes on Ft Wainwright. We have not been given a time slot yet. Our director has put together a few people for a team, but if you are interested, contact me either by phone or e-mail to let me know. Here is what it is all about:
''At Bowl for Kids' Sake, we don't award top prizes for the best scores, but for the most pledges. Every bowler with $75.00 or more in pledges wins a free pass to the Alaska Club, and a t-shirt. Bowlers with $100 or more in paid pledges after billing earn a gift certificate from Food Factory. Bowlers with $200 or more in paid pledges after billing earn gift certificates from the Pump House and Food Factory. Bowlers with $300 or more in paid pledges after billing earn gift certificates from the Pump House, Food Factory, and Lavelle's Bistro! So the more pledges you sign up, the better your chances of winning great prizes! All money raised supports Big Brothers Big Sisters here in the Fairbanks area, helping kids stay on the right track and reach their highest potential!''
The pledge sheet is included in the newsletter so you can
get started collecting your pledges.
Sorry, no pledge sheet on the web, but I'll bet you can find one at the
shop

Our web host (Fairnet.org) is going through some changes. They are upgrading their servers and moving everything from the old to the new hardware. For us, everything is back to normal. Our site is found at the re-directed link: http://www.fairbankshog.org Whatever happens in the future, this link should always work.
Some of last month's changes disappeared, and will re-appear by next week. By now, everything should be back to normal.

In talking to some member's, it became clear that the individual comfort level with the World Wide Web is quite varied. With the constant threat of Virus and Trojan code infecting your computer, I fully agree that to err on caution is the wise approach. In today's world, if you don't have permissions set properly in your browser, just visiting a site can download an infection. This happens without your knowledge or any intervention on your part. Scary deal, RIGHT!
First off, the Fairbanks HOG site runs NO scripts (nothing that gives hidden directions to your browser or computer). You can verify that for yourself by opening up any page and tell your browser to view source. This reveals the code that is used to display the page, and is open for everyone to see. Any browser with any setting can view our pages correctly, which is why we do not have "splash pages", music, etc. I opted for "plain jane" and safe. Even a counter on a page can retrive information on the machine loading that page. If you think you are anonomous surfing, your kidding yourself.
Another question that has arisen is why our web site is not registered with National HOG. Well, some of the reasons have to do with the above paragraph. One of the items National HOG requires is that the "Members" area be password protected. Do you want to have to "Log in" with a password to read the SwineLine? It would also requires a script to validate passwords, and although I can guarantee the script would be harmless, it would require you to enable permissions in your browser that could leave you open to attacks at other sites visited. Be aware, with the path the industry is on, things are only going to get worse.
Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.
Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter.
I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/
Mozilla Firebird is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
