Hints and Information

Picking up a copy of the MilePost will be the best investment you can make for your trip to Alaska. Although space is always limited on the "scoot" you will find it to be a valuable tool.

Fairbanks temperatures for June range between 46F to 68F on average. Normally, Rally days are in the mid 70s.  You could see leftover snow on the side of the road in some of the mountain passes, so plan accordingly.

Daylight hours for Fairbanks in June average 21 1/2 hrs.

From Northern Canada to Fairbanks watch for moose on or near the road. They are unpredictable and are just as likely to run towards you as away from you.

You will encounter several wooden bridges in the Yukon. If it happens to be raining, they will be slick as ice. These bridges take their toll on bikers every year. Don't become a statistic!

Unless you take the ferry from Bellinghan, Washington to Valdez, Alaska, you will need to pass through CUSTOMS. Canadian customs can require you to have vehicle registration, proof of insurance, birth certificate, and enough cash to cover your expenses while in the country. Also, handguns are not allowed in the country. NOTE: Vehicle and personal searches are a possiblilty.  Since 9/11, Canadian customs prefer passport's for identification.  Although, not a necessity, it appears to simplify the process

With the current difference between the Canadian Dollar and the US dollar, it may be worth while exchanging currency at a Canadian bank. This prevents exchange rate discussions when filling the scooter with petrol.

If you are into scenery and have the time, our favorite side trip is Whitehorse to Skagway, ferry to Hanes, then back on the ALCAN.  For the more adventurous, the ride from Whitehorse to Dawson to Tok AK., via the Top-of-the-World Hwy. is a lifetime experience.  The road is properly named, narrow and winding, with about 60 miles of dirt.  Ya won't come away clean, but will see some country few experience.

Watch out for the newly painted roads - they're slick. Have a safe trip and we will be looking foward to meeting one and all.
