From the Director

Hello gang. Here we are in the midst of my least favorite month of the year. We have already hit -50 a couple of times and I am running out of places to push snow! On the brighter side, the football playoffs are in full swing and the Superbowl is right around the corner. We are also gaining daylight and that means light at the end of this winter tunnel. This is when I always start thinking of new parts or accessories I want to add to the scoot or what maintenance needs to be done before riding season. Anything we can do to combat the dreaded cabin fever! Don't forget the 2nd annual pajama party on the 5th of February at Chatanika Lodge. Last year proved to be almost too much fun and Ron and Shirley always treat us good. There may be some interesting PJs worn as well. I hope to see ya'll at the meetings, we have quite a few ideas for fundraisers and rides floating around and we need input from all. Come on out to the Badger Den and say hello to some old friends, we all need help getting through this time of year. As always, ride safe and ride free.

Computers have diminished in price to the point where software is a large part of the cost. You can buy a desktop computer (less monitor & shipping) for $250.00 to $300.00. The rest of the cost is software. With the advent of Linux and the Open Software Foundation, you can outfit your computer with all the software you need for free and interesting enough, many of the software programs written for Linux have versions that run on Windows. I will attempt to review one cross platform software program in each copy of the newsletter so the windows users can sample what Linux software is like.

With digital camera's becoming more predominant every month, a good, free graphics editor seem a logical choice for this month's review. I was normally disappointed with the software that came with the camera. It was fine for transfering the pics to the computer, but after that, seemed to fall flat. The GIMP is a graphics editor that allows you to do just about anything imaginable to a picture. It's one of those programs that ya need to spend a little time exploring. Also, will run very slowly on a bare bones PC, so read the page that the link takes you to before downloading/installing. Have Fun!
