Wow, the middle of February already! When it starts to get lighter in the day, we all start thinking of riding soon. This is the worst time of year for me. Spring is so close but so far away, but I will "hang in there" for a few more weeks. It was a nice surprise to have J.T. Hasley, H.O.G.'s Northwest Regional Manager, up here for a couple of days. He was a welcome addition to the February membership meeting and gave away some nice gifts. Congratulations to Joe Procell for winning the 15th anniversary H.O.G. knife and also to Nancy Barlow for winning a jacket donated by John Haddad. That's my idea of a meeting get together with friends, eat some good food, have good conversation, and win some Harley stuff! The March bike show is in full swing and the sign up forms are out so take this opportunity to show off your ride and maybe take home some hardware. We are having a raffle this year and ticket sales will be underway soon. We will be giving away three prizes this year, a new 883 Sportster, a new 4-wheeler, and a $500 gift certificate to the Harley Outpost. This year, John is giving one beautiful jacket from the Outpost to both the male and the female who sell the most raffle tickets. How's that for incentive? Once again, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Fairbanks Breast Cancer Detection Center will be on the receiving end of our charity work There's so much more going on I can't say it all here. Hope to see you at the March meeting. Ride like the wind!

Hi everyone,
To start things off I would like to thank everyone who attended the PJ party at the Chatanika Lodge. I have never in my life seen so many different types of jammies and slippers at one time and none of them being the same. And of course our main entertainment was Tom G in his night gown and moose slippers and Steve S singing songs. Shirley in her flannels and Ron in his sweats. I know now that I'm really out of shape or just getting old as I was attempting to play Twister. The way we had to bend our bodies to get our hands and feet on the colored spots we needed. After about four games I went on to play LCR (a dice game) and I had so much fun as the others did. Thank you Jimmy for the games. Another lady brought her jammies and joined in on the fun too. The dinner, snacks and breakfast were awesome. So much laughter and lots of pictures were taken. We had a surprise birthday party for Connie L and she was really surprised. Thank you Joe and Teddy for making sure she got there. A big thank you to Ron and Shirley for making our first of many PJ parties a great one.
Had my surgery and all is well and will be really sore
for a while. I missed the BB/BS Bowling but heard a few showed up to sponsor
the HOG group. Wish I could have been there as Walt S and I kicked butt
last year and got the top score in our group of six. It was so much fun.
Thanks to all that attended this year. Happy Valentines Day to everyone!!!
Now we are working towards March and our bike show at the Bentley Mall which
will be on the 27-28 of March. Steve and Jimmy are working out the details
with John and we will let everyone know what is happening by the next meeting.
So be there, I know I will be!!! For those of you who did not attend the
last meeting, you missed J T. He brought gifts for the door prizes (Cajun
Joe won a knife) and everyone enjoyed his visit.

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster.
All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the
local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing
an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first
you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop
or on-line at http://www.hog.com. Two
lists are attached, 1) Those individuals who's membership expired in 2003
and 2) Those individuals who's membership expired or will expire in Jan
through Apr 2004. Please renew your local membership as soon as possible
so that we can continue to count you as members in the Fairbanks chapter.
Those individuals who do not renew their national or local membership by
end of month April will be dropped from the Swineline mailing list and e-mail
list. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell
at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.
The individuals listed below are current with National HOG, however, their local membership has expired or will expire according to secretarial records. If you have renewed please contact Lori and let her know loriprice@lookwithlori.com or 455-7244. If you haven't renewed, you may do so at the general membership meeting or at the Outpost through Aleshia Purcell, out Membership Officer.

As the new editor of the Swine-Line, I am open to suggestions on what you would like to see in the newsletter. I will make a serious effort to make sure all club members receive the newsletter, either by e-mail or via the U.S. Post Office. Members who receive the Swine-Line through the mail and would like to begin receiving an e-mail version are asked to forward their e-mail address to Cindy Gollwitzer at c.gollwitzer1@gci.net. In addition to cutting down on the newsletter mailing costs, members who request e-mail distribution will receive mid-month activities updates.

It's almost March and there is hope after all. The Vernal
Equinox, Iditarod, and the HOG Bike show will all soon be here and getting
the bikes ready to ride will be on everybody's to do list. There may be
some of us that find the prospect a bit intimidating. Then there are those
who may be tempted to just drop it in gear and go, that is if it starts.
Hold on Bubba or Bubett there are some things you need to look at before
hitting the road.
After sitting all winter the tires have very likely lost
some air. You need to check the tires for proper inflation and get them
back up to the pressure as listed in your owner's manual. By the way how
does the tread look? Did you put the bike up needing a new tire last fall?
Better talk to Clark now before the rush is on. Check the clutch, and throttle
cables for binding and lube them if they feel rough or gritty. How do the
brakes feel? Are they a bit mushy? It's possible there's a bit of moisture
that has found it's way into the brake fluid. You need to get the brake
fluid changed before you ride it. Battery, have you had it on that battery
tender or do you need to get it charged? If you don't know what you're doing
with a battery charger please take it to someone who does. Batteries can
be dangerous beasts if you don't know how to handle them correctly.
Before you're tempted to go for a spin roll the bike out
and give it a good bath. While you're washing it, look it over really close
for any loose or missing hardware. Then before you try to ride off check
to see if the clutch disks have stuck. With the engine off put the bike
in first gear and see if you can roll it with the clutch pulled in. If you
can't find someone to help you rock the bike back and forth until you can
push it in gear with the clutch pulled in.
Well, the bike is ready to go. How about you? I know your
chomping at the bit ready to ride but your skills and equipment may not
be. Just how old is that helmet? Are the straps worn thread bare? Boots
a bit rough? Gloves? Better head for the Outpost for a little shopping,
go ahead and tell the significant other it's my fault. I'm in trouble most
of the time anyway. Now it wouldn't hurt to find an empty parking lot and
practice some turning drills and some quick stops just to get back in practice.

Finally the fools in cars seem to be getting dumber and
dumber every year. I just got rear ended the first part of February by somebody
who didn't realize that packed snow and ice are slick. It had only been
slick for the last four months. Well they aren't going to be looking for
motorcycles or if they are they'll be rubbernecking your new scoot and not
paying attention to what's going on around them. BE CAREFUL!!!
By the way we're still looking for Road Captains. If you would like to be
a Road Captain contact me at oldiron@mosquitonet.com
or 488-1728.

I just want to let everyone know we raised over $300.00 dollars bowling for Big Brothers & Big Sisters in February. Thanks to Steve & Kim Schmitz, Walt & Brandi Schader, Tom Gollwitzer, and my wife Tia for representing the Harley Owner's Group. We had a good time.
I want to let everyone know about the annual H.O.G. bike
show scheduled for 27-28 Mar 04 at the Bentley Mall. We are looking for
maximum participation to show the Fairbanks community what we are all about.
Entry forms are available at the Outpost as well as on the web page. A form
is being mailed in this edition of the Swineline as well. Bikes can be dropped
off on Friday, 26 Mar, between 9-10 p.m. Lets get ready to ride! #jking@gci.net
or 372-2791

Ads can be submitted to the editor via e-mail: c.gollwitzer1@gci.net or dropped off
at the shop to be put in the Editor's box.

Our web host (Fairnet.org) is going through some changes. They are upgrading their servers and moving everything from the old to the new hardware. For us, everything is back to normal. Our site is found at the re-directed link: http://www.fairbankshog.org Whatever happens in the future, this link should always work.

In talking to some member's, it became clear that the individual comfort level with the World Wide Web is quite varied. With the constant threat of Virus and Trojan code infecting your computer, I fully agree that to err on caution is the wise approach. In today's world, if you don't have permissions set properly in your browser, just visiting a site can download an infection. This happens without your knowledge or any intervention on your part. Scary deal, RIGHT!
First off, the Fairbanks HOG site runs NO scripts (nothing that gives hidden directions to your browser or computer). You can verify that for yourself by opening up any page and tell your browser to view source. This reveals the code that is used to display the page, and is open for everyone to see. Any browser with any setting can view our pages correctly, which is why we do not have "splash pages", music, etc. I opted for "plain jane" and safe. Even a counter on a page can retrive information on the machine loading that page. If you think you are anonomous surfing, your kidding yourself.
Another question that has arisen is why our web site is not registered with National HOG. Well, some of the reasons have to do with the above paragraph. One of the items National HOG requires is that the "Members" area be password protected. Do you want to have to "Log in" with a password to read the SwineLine? It would also requires a script to validate passwords, and although I can guarantee the script would be harmless, it would require you to enable permissions in your browser that could leave you open to attacks at other sites visited. Be aware, with the path the industry is on, things are only going to get worse.
Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.
Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter.
I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/
Mozilla Firebird is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
