The General Membership Meeting will be held at the Sunset Inn

on Old Rich highway, Fairbanks.

February 4th, 7 PM

Director

Well, we are getting closer to the riding season. It's time to start getting your bike ready for the bike show for this year. Mike Kane will be heading up the show this year. If you have any ideas, or want to help, see Mike. At the January meeting it was decided to do another bike raffle this year. Because the Rally is in Palmer this year, it was decided to give the bike away at Golden Days. To help promote ticket sales at Golden Days, the membership wanted to have a float in the Golden Days parade with the bike on it. We could sell tickets from the float during the parade. Hoppy Mew and Charley Meyers are in charge of the float committee. Any one wanting to help with this should see them. We would also sell tickets as we did last year. If you want to help with any of these projects or have ideas you want to share, come to the next membership meeting.
Glen

Assistant Director

First, let me say that I'm glad to able to serve on our board of directors. I want everyone to know that I am open to all suggestions, comments, and concerns. I would like to hear from anybody who has an idea for a ride or just an idea that would get members to become more involved. I would love to do a "unity" run somewhere this summer. This would be a run getting all of our members together for one ride. It doesn't matter where or when, just get everyone there. I would also like to get a picture and send it into Hogtales. Think about it. We have our first Valentine's Day dinner/dance on the 17th of February at the Sunset Strip. There will be a sign up sheet at the shop. Also, don't forget about the Big Brother/Big Sister Bowling. April is just around the corner and that means The Bentley Mall Bike Show. Get out those polish rags and get to polishing. I look forward hearing from everyone. Remember this is your club, let me hear from you.

Mike Kane.

Secretary

Happy New Millennium! First off, I would like to thank all of you for electing me as your new Chapter Secretary. I will try to do my best to fill the shoes, or should I say books, that were so graciously handed over to me (right after I was elected! HA, HA). To Jan Tate and assistant Margie Myers, thanks for a great job, ladies. This New Year looks like it is going to be very eventful and a lot of fun! I hope to see a lot of our members joining us in the fun. I would really like to try to meet each and every one of our members. If you have any ideas or suggestions you would like to share with the group, please feel free to let me know. I will try to assist you in any way. Remember, this is your chapter. Get involved!

I would like to welcome our new members, and hope to see you at the February meeting:
Lowell & Vickie Davis and Garry Ervin.

Local membership will expire for the following people. Please see the girls at the Outpost or myself to renew your membership.
Paulita Alvarez, John Beckley, James Brown, Maryann Edholm, Marilyn & Theodore Enoka,
Rafael Estevez, Jeremiah Ferguson, David Griest, Jason Kittel, Kevin Merchant, Ebe Naylor,
Peggy Nelson, Steven Rains, Alxis & Michael Sims, Bill Smallwood, Larry Stephens, Jan Tate.

Quick reminder, keep current with your national H.O.G. membership. If your membership is expired, so is your local chapter membership.

Safety Officer

Hi,
Right now it's a bit tough to think about bike safety. After all, as I write this it's forty below and the ice fog is thick as all get out. But now is a real good time to pull up beside the fire with a good book. Some of the better ones I've read this winter have been A Twist of the Wrist, volume 1 & 2 by Keith Code. These books are written as a road racing primer, but there is plenty of good advice on how to handle a motorcycle under extreme conditions. Code goes heavily into the mental aspects of riding, how to think, how to see, where to be looking, and what to be thinking. I would not recommend them to a raw beginner, but they are really good for someone with a few miles under their belt.

For the newcomers, get The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Guide to Motorcycling Excellence. This is the text that accompanies both the beginning and advanced safety classes. In the winter, the text can be read at one's leisure and thought about. I'm having Nancy read this one before she takes the course, just to familiarize her with the terms and the theory she'll be taught in the class come spring. It's also a good refresher for the experienced, with one of the better explanations of counter steering I've seen. These books are available by special order from Waldens at the Bentley Mall or from Amazon.com. Next month, we'll be getting the bikes ready for riding at last!
Finally, Ol' Joe says, "Keep some extra distance between you and those big trucks. Pickin' that gravel out your forehead hurts." (Not a bad idea for wintertime driving around town - may save a windshield ed.)

Editor's Desk

As I glance out the window at the neighbor's roof, realization sets in that it may be time to consider removing some of that white stuff which has been accumulating these past few months. Laziness and fear has deterred me to this point, but the thought of replacing rafters and shingles spurs me on. I guess tomorrow I'll be on the second story with a safety line and a shovel, all the while thinking about looking for a one story home.

As everyone hopefully is aware, this is your newsletter. Any member that would like to submit an article for publication is welcome to do so. Articles for submission need to be placed in my drop at the Outpost or e-mailed to the address below no later than the 20th of the month.

As always, if there is a problem or you wish to change the way you receive your copy of The Swine-Line, call 458-7116 in the evening or e-mail: fbkhog@eagle.ptialaska.net

From the Outpost:

Well now that the holidays are over, we are on the home stretch to summer!

Parts & Service:

If you haven't already thought of getting your bike geared up for the riding season, you need to come see Clark and Thomas. They are ready to run some great savings for the month of February. They are having 20% off all Harley-Davidson Motor Parts and Accessories that we install, along with free pickup and delivery. Also, come see Thomas for the new high speed Police Tires (Seeming that he is familiar with the Cops around town).
Erskin Diddle Diskin Deer

Motorclothes:

Gayle's last day was January 29th. She and Rich are headed to Germany early February. If you haven't had a chance to wish them goodbye, we are all planning on meeting at the Silver Spur to do some two-stepping on Saturday, Feb. 5th. Let's make Fairbanks memorable for them, so they will come back in three years.

If you haven't had a chance, stop in to introduce yourself to Autumn, she is now working with Jessie in Motorclothes. If you need something for that special someone, the girls will be running some Sweetheart Saving throughout the store.

Chicken Joe

Well, boys & girls, it is that time of the month again to fill you in on what's been happening on the road. December was a little slow in Texas, but I did get in a couple of toy runs. One, with the Golden Triangle HOG Chapter, was a great run. I rode an Excelsior-Henderson, nice bike, but not a bagger. Foot boards vibrated too much and it was a little louder than I like. Thomas would like it. I did win a car detailing job, but since I do not have a car, oh well, I just gave it away. I was trying to sneak into Beaumont with out my ex-wife noticing, but I ended up on TV talking about the Toy Run and my moose kill accident. Guess who saw it on the news? Another blunder, think maybe I talk too much? Also, did the run with Cut & Shoot HOG Chapter. It was rather large. They had over 800 bikes there. At least this year I did not break down, as I did last year.

Leah Tavens showed up in Beaumont after Christmas. We headed west to explore southwest Texas. Interesting thing was I broke down 4 times, once in Beaumont before we left, and once in San Antonio. Had to get towed in. Again in Corpus Christi and in Lorado, but was able to ride to a dealer. Hope all the bugs are out now! Got to give those folks in San Antonio HD the credit, they found all the bugs sneaking around in the bike. Leah and I decided to split up in Corpus Christi. She was heading for Thailand. I continued on west through Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Got to Tucson the day before Glenn & Lisa showed up, was trying to get some rest from that wonderful flu that is creeping around down here.

Well, Ebe and Connie, Fred and Leena, and I showed up to pick up Glenn and Lisa. We made a run with the Southern Arizona Harley Riders to Bisbee on Sunday. It was a nice warm day. Lisa was really impressed how those folks used these white mats to keep the erosion on the hillsides down. You guys have to ask her about those mats. I was not so impressed at the snow on the side of those hills. I knew it was time to head for warmer parts. We left the group and rode to Tombstone. Most of the AZ riders went home, too cold for them to ride. All the ladies ended up at Big Nose Kate's Saloon, trying to get some gent to dance on the bar, in chaps. You know, you can't take those biker women anywhere! The guys, well, we went to the ice cream parlor. What a switch, seems a little different! Now Tombstone has a building that the bats come out of at night, that is according to Fred and Ebe. I have yet to see any bats come out of this building and still haven't. I think Fred and Ebe might have been pulling my leg. I spent the week with Fred & Leena, had a great time. Fred would go to work in the morning, come home at noon, and we would take off for a ride in the afternoon. Seems like my kind of job, that is, if I were thinking of taking a job.

I figured it was time to move on before I wore out my welcome, so I moved in with Dave and Amber. It was really nice seeing them again. We decided to make a run to the Paramore Crater. It should have been a short half day ride, but Dave got lost. Well, he was leading, and we ended up in New Mexico. Remember the last time I wrote you about Amber getting lost, well! I think they have been together too long.

Now for you Anchorage/House of Harley folks that get the Swineline. I don't know how he did it, but I ran into Barry at a rest stop south of Phoenix. He said it's been too cold in Anchorage and wanted to ride his bike in some warm weather. Seems he slipped out on you guys for the warmer climate, especially since it has been in the high 70's and low 80's down here.

For now I am back in Tucson, had dinner with Barb and Dave Cogliano. Dave is a little excited about his new Road King, go figure. I think Barb is most happy she does not have to ride on that little itty bitty pad called a seat. Dave had his old bike lowered for Barb. She can ride by herself now.

I am heading for Fairbanks on 19 January, but I am only staying 4 days. Then back to the warmth of Arizona and south Texas. I just want to experience some cold weather, but I did order up a little warm weather for you guys before I get there. I don't want it to be too cold for me. So you can thank me for the warmth. Also, when I got to the airport to fly here, guess who I ran into, did you get it? It was Becky. She is enjoying the warmth of Arizona, also. I think she would like to stay. Seems she and a group of ladies went cruising south of the border.

You folks have a wonderful January and February, will let you know next month what is happening "On the Road".

God Bless

Chicken Joe
