Well Folks, this has been the best summer I have ever seen in my near 20 years in Fairbanks. We could have done without the smoke but overall I felt the heat of the south and spent most of the time with a cold one on my deck! I have not put a lot of miles on the bike and my favorite time of the year (fall) is already upon us. It's time, for me at least, to get in the hunter-gatherer mode and store up some meat and fish for the winter. Congrats to the people who won in the yearly raffle and thanks to all who contributed selling tickets. Jimmy and Rhonda were the big ticket sellers and were rewarded quite well by John Haddad. The final amounts will be tallied and provided at a future membership meeting. I'd like to hear from you all on what you think of the raffle; what and how may prizes there should be; and how we could earn money for charity other ways. Bring your thoughts to the next membership meeting. We still have plenty of riding weather left and some fun events planned. See ya'll on the road. Ride safe and ride free!

Haven't we been very lucky with having such a nice and warm summer and not many mosquitos''? We have put up with a lot of smoke and still do once in awhile but otherwise it has been nice. The Golden Days parade was a lot of fun. I would like to thank everyone who helped with selling the raffle tickets before, during and after the parade. It was a lot of hard work but we managed to make $17,575.00. Checks will be given to BB/BS and Breast Cancer Detection center at our October meeting. The raffle winners are Robin Taylor -Bike, Lena Maio - 4 Wheeler, and Jen Grundy - $500 gift cert. The sale at the shop was a good turn out and so was the BBQ. A big Thank you to the staff at the shop for making it a wonderful day for everyone. Haven't we been very lucky with having such a nice and warm summer and not many mosquitos''? Thanks to all of you who brought food for the BBQ (Especially Robin Gross who brought 5-6 dishes). The 31st of July we had a HOG Poker Run and it turned out to be a lot of fun. We ended up at Chatanika Lodge where Kris Petri won the best hand. Maria had a going away BBQ for Charlie and Margie Myers on Aug. 3rd. It was a good turn out and lots of good food. We will miss you both! A few couples spent the night there too. Labor Day weekend is coming up soon and a lot of us are camping at Birch Lake from Friday to Monday. Call Steve @ 488-0777 to reserve you a spot. If you aren't able to camp out come join us for the day. Most of us will be a cabin #17. As most of you have already heard, a really nice man by the name of John Portmann who is also a Hells Angel passed away on Aug. 5th in Anchorage after rolling his 6 wheeler and hitting his head on a wooden post. He was at the Talkeetna Bluegrass and music festival where he has volunteered as security for the last 8-9 years. The last HOG meeting which was a great turn out, was at the Midway lodge on August 6 and Nelda DeLeon won the $50 cert. Our last Salcha clean up is coming up nest month. It will be September 11. My sweet man Cajun Joe and I celebrated out first anniversary on August 2nd and he retired after working 42 years on August 3rd. Now the real work begins. His honey-do will last him another 40 years. See you at our next HOG meeting, Rhonda

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

Thanks to Nancy for coming forward to be the Ladies of Harley officer. A copy of the Tuesday night ride schedule for the rest of the season is included in the Swineline and is also posted to the web page.

Members who receive the Swine-Line through the mail and
would like to begin receiving an e-mail version are asked to forward their
e-mail address to me at c.gollwitzer1@gci.net.
In addition to cutting down on the newsletter mailing costs members who
request e-mail distribution will receive monthly activities updates when
available. The deadline for submissions to be included in the Swineline
is the 15th of the month.

Boy, talk about busy, last months dead line came and went
before I even knew what was happening. Sorry guys. I guess I've been spending
all my free time riding.
Speaking of riding, with the weather being about perfect for it I would
bet a lot of us are getting a lot more seat time than usual this year. Which
begs the question, have you checked your bike over lately? A lot of normal
wear out items are likely to be wearing out faster than usual this year.
The ol' ornery one is going to have to have a second front tire put on her
bike this summer.
You need to set aside a little time to check your tires, brake pads and
the like to make sure you've got enough to see you through the rest of the
riding season. You don't need to end up in an accident because that tire
just ran out of tread.
While you're at it stop and think about your riding technique. Are you getting
real comfortable on the road? If your not thinking much about what you are
doing when your riding you might be heading for a problem. Now is not the
time to be getting complacent about your riding. You don't need to do anything
special or out of the ordinary. Just try to give your riding a little more
thought.
With that lets stay safe and hope for a good Indian summer. Rich Barlow

Well me made it. We paid for our prizes and raised around $6,000.00 for charities. Which was my main goal, not much planned for the rest of the year except labor day weekend at Birch lake, and Salcha Rd cleanup in September plus the Christmas party in December. See ya at the next meeting.

This is good. I've used it for a couple of months with no problems. After 3-4 years of few software inovations, It's great to see competition start to re-establish itself. Options are a wonderful thing. They insure advancement. Without healthy competion, we would all still be using DOS.
Linux is going great guns! Sam's is selling a Red Hat machine for around $300. The OS is maturing quickly and becomming more user friendly. I picked one up, brought it home, plugged it into the network, and in 30 minutes was online, had access to the rest of the network, and was able to share windows printers. Be aware though, if things go wrong, you still have to be a "bit of a geek" to find and fix the problems. For those of you who are adventures, It's a good time to learn about the future, but for mainstream users, I'd give it another 2-3 years before making the change.
Back to Thunderbird:
Reclaim your e-mailyou're in control now! (great
spam filters)
Smartest Way to Stop Junk Mail
Thunderbird provides the most effective tools for detecting
junk mail. Our tools analyze your e-mail, and identifies those that are
most likely to be junk. You can automatically have your junk mail deleted
or you can put in a folder you specify, just in case you like reading junk
mail.
View your e-mail the way you want it. Access your e-mail
with Thunderbird's new three-column view. Customize your toolbar, change
its look with themes, and use Mail Views to quickly sort through your e-mail.
Thunderbird provides enterprise and government grade security
features such as S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, support for
certificates and security devices.
Thunderbird gives you IMAP/POP support, support for HTML
mail, labels, quick search, smart addressbook, return receipts, advanced
message filtering, LDAP address completion, import tools, powerful search,
and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.
Thunderbird lets you add additional features as you need
them through extensions. Extensions are a powerful tool to help you build
a mail client that meets your specific needs.
This software may work well enough to be relied upon as
your primary messaging client as it is based off a stable Mozilla 1.6 architecture.
However, Mozilla Thunderbird is still a preview release, and therefore several
features may not be complete.
Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.
Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter. Another new option for mail is Thunderbird. It can be found on the same site as Firebird. I am currently experimenting with Thunderbird and will offer an update next month.
I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/
Mozilla Firefox (new name, same program) is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
