Let there be spring! Finally, it seems that Mother Nature has felt gracious enough to let a bit of warmth back in our winter wonderland. Every year I welcome spring with more intensity than the last, which tells me that I may be developing a dislike for the white stuff that invades our lives (and riding season) for six months a year. I'm starting to believe I could actually live without snow! Although I've been told I had me a pretty good time at Arctic Man, there's nothing like the sound of a big twin rumblin down the highway. It's good to be on two wheels and on the road again. We're getting more and more faces at the membership meetings and it's great to see all of you. The once a month "get together" is ultimately a chance for us to socialize, shoot the bull, etc I'm trying hard to make the formal part of the meeting shorter and the social part of the meeting longer. As always, I welcome any suggestions. There are multiple events coming up in the near future, including the start of our weekly rides and I hope to see all of you at one point or another. Hats off to those who helped with the bike show and also Rhonda and crew for the Easter egg hunt. I know we've waited a long time to be back on the pavement, but take it easy and keep it upright. Ride safe and ride free!

Can you believe it's already April? The snow is melting, roads are clearing and I'm counting down the days before Joe and I are riding in the wind. Just wish the gravel were cleaned up. The Bike show at the Bentley Mall turned out real nice. Sold lots of raffle tickets and talked to a lot of people. The weather could have been a little warmer but as they say, "This is Alaska!" Joe Villa, Joe and I thought we'd be smart and put the bikes and tent trailer on his big trailer and take them to Eielson and wash them in a warm garage. That was great and they were real clean and dry. We thought everything was dry. NOT! The lock on the tent trailer that was attached to the bike was frozen solid. Joe Villa had to help Joe heat it up with lighters and thaw it out for the key to fit. It took awhile and it was very cold out but they managed. With the help of other members who were already at the mall, they got the bikes and tent trailer inside. For a few days before the bike show I tried to convince Joe to take his old bagger (Badass) and tent trailer. He kept saying he wanted to take his new one and finally I won and we took the old bike. Well, well, guess what? He won first place for his bike and the look on his face was worth a million bucks. He just kept saying "this old bike?" Now maybe he will listen to his better half. (Haha) After the bike show as we were loading the bikes up it got real cold and started snowing. Now these are real hard core Alaskan bikers if I say so myself. Thanks to all of you who put their bikes in the show and helped sell raffle tickets. A special thanks to all the Charter members for being at the show and judged our bikes. It was great to see you all again! Thank you Steve and Jimmy for getting the bike show together and Tia for working hard getting the tickets ready to sell.
The Easter BBQ was a big turn out and lots of fun for all.
It was sunny and warm out which made it nice for everyone looking for eggs.
LOH brought all kinds of food to share. The kids and adults had fun looking
for eggs that I hid in the snow. The little kids 0-5 years found theirs
in the building. Joe cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for everyone. It was
nice afterwards when everyone pitched in and helped clean up.
Don't forget about Saturday, April 24 at 4:00PM at the Salcha Senior building.
It's our HOG bingo game. Remember there are non-cash prizes. It cost $12.50
for each game packet, $5.00 for spaghetti dinner and $1.00 each for soda
or bottled water. Kids under 19 can play but can't call out bingo or claim
prizes. The parents have to do that for them. The money goes towards new
tables for the seniors. The afghan will be raffled off that night. If you
haven't gotten your tickets yet they are .50 cents each and will be sold
at the bingo game until the drawing. They are selling crafts there too so
bring your spending money and help support the Salcha seniors. We are using
their gaming number for our raffle tickets.
I was lost for words at out last meeting. There were so many members I hadn't seen in a long time and it was good to see everyone there. Hope there are more members next time. Fred Atkinson won the $50 cert. to the Harley shop. One to be given away at every meeting until December. See you then.
Here are a couple of pictures of Cajun Joe and my bike and the Easter winners.

Please help us to update the chapter's membership roster. All local members must be a member of national H.O.G. before joining the local H.O.G. chapter. If you joined the local H.O.G chapter by completing an application at the Shop, but did not become a national H.O.G member first you need to do that. You can become a National member by going to the Shop or on-line at http://www.hog.com. If you have questions please contact Lori Price or Aleshia Purcell at the Outpost. If you have different information please let us know.

If any ladies are interested in heading up the Ladies of Harley or in being a LOH road captain please contact the director. Thanks to Maria Dunham for putting together the Tuesday night ride schedule that is included in this edition of the Swineline. The schedule is also posted here.

Members who receive the Swine-Line through the mail and
would like to begin receiving an e-mail version are asked to forward their
e-mail address to me at c.gollwitzer1@gci.net.
In addition to cutting down on the newsletter mailing costs members who
request e-mail distribution will receive monthly activities updates when
available. The deadline for submissions to be included in the Swineline
is the 15th of the month.

I have been tagged by one of the Internet bulletin boards
I frequent to moderate a safety board. I'm now trying to write something
on a weekly schedule. Now always being an advocate of efficiency I'll be
sharing some of those columns with you with a bit of editing.
Roll the Dice
One of the regulars has reminded me of something very important that we
all need to seriously think about. I have been working around military aviation
for the last twenty-five years and safety has always been an important topic
of discussion. The boss takes a very dim view of flying the taxpayer's very
expensive airplanes into the ground. For that reason when there is an accident
after the investigation is finished, the results are published and everybody
is strongly encouraged to read it. In fact they publish the results of accident
investigations involving general (private) and commercial accidents too.
What's this? We're riding motorcycles not flying airplanes. I'm getting
to that. One of the leading causes of fatal accidents involving general
aviation and military aviation is a phenomenon called Get-Home-itis. Trying
to get home when the weather or mechanical problems are getting worse and
the pilot thinks "I can get home if I can just get a little farther."
Well, many times they do, but often they don't. They end up hitting the
ground and hard.
Have you ever had that thought? "I can get home if I can hold it together
for a few more miles." Maybe you will, but is it worth the risk? How
many accidents have been caused by pushing your luck and trying to make
it home? I'll bet good money it's a lot. Is the weather going to be getting
intolerable? Hot, cold, raining, possibly snow? Get a room! Is the bike
coming apart? If you can't fix it get a tow, don't try to limp the bike
home if it involves brakes, tires, lights, or anything else that can affect
the safety of the ride.
One of the things I have heard is "With today's Harley's, all you need
to ride cross country is a cell phone, credit card, & a gun." What
you need to learn is when to use that credit card. Some of you may remember
when I wrote on hypothermia a while back. I was giving a past director a
bad time because he came real close to a bad wreck. He thought he could
make that last hundred miles home when he should have given it up a hundred
miles back. Good sense finally kicked in and he got himself a room even
though he was relatively close to home. It's better to be late than to never
make it. Think hard, it could be the difference between inconvenience and
a lot worse. Don't push your luck.

May is our Chapter anniversary month. For those who may
not know the chapter was established in May 1990. The first director was
Mike Gill. Mike served as director from May 1990 to December 1995. Al Woodward
became Director in January 1996 and served in that post until December 1997.
Our membership base has grown from the original 20 members to over 200.
The Fairbanks, Alaska Chapter is the Harley Owners Group's farthest north
chapter. It was originally established by our resident dealer, Bill Fenderson
of Harley's Farthest North Outpost. After Bill's passing the chapter was
sponsored by Bill's son, Pat, and now the current Outpost owners sponsor
our Chapter. The Chapter is committed to serving our local community through
fund raisers such as bike raffles, the chapter has been able to donate to
charities in the Fairbanks area. The Chapter has also "adopted"
the Fairbank's office of the Big Brother, Big Sisters.

I have a ribbon medalian for you. We came instseed (undefeated) in the tournament. We had to play the second place team, the Valley Blades, for the State Championship. The Championship game was 3 regualar periods with 7 overtime periods before anyone scored - the Blades scored on us, winning the the State Championship and us Runner Ups. Our game lasted from 2:00 until about 5:30 with no breaks in the overtime period.
After the game so many people from the other team - parents and players commended our boys for their behavior. No one could really tell who the winner was as our boys were so excited to be done with the 7 periods of overtime, and we were very happy to take the Runner Up Placement. They performed very well - our Goalie even managed to get himself another shut out. They really played their hearts out - we even had one player black out on the ice. He just kept wanting to skate no matter what, to try to get one final goal.
Thanks so much for everything!!!

This is good. I've used it for a couple of months with no problems. After 3-4 years of few software inovations, It's great to see competition start to re-establish itself. Options are a wonderful thing. They insure advancement. Without healthy competion, we would all still be using DOS.
Linux is going great guns! Sam's is selling a Red Hat machine for around $300. The OS is maturing quickly and becomming more user friendly. I picked one up, brought it home, plugged it into the network, and in 30 minutes was online, had access to the rest of the network, and was able to share windows printers. Be aware though, if things go wrong, you still have to be a "bit of a geek" to find and fix the problems. For those of you who are adventures, It's a good time to learn about the future, but for mainstream users, I'd give it another 2-3 years before making the change.

Smartest Way to Stop Junk Mail
Thunderbird provides the most effective tools for detecting
junk mail. Our tools analyze your e-mail, and identifies those that are
most likely to be junk. You can automatically have your junk mail deleted
or you can put in a folder you specify, just in case you like reading junk
mail.
View your e-mail the way you want it. Access your e-mail
with Thunderbird's new three-column view. Customize your toolbar, change
its look with themes, and use Mail Views to quickly sort through your e-mail.
Thunderbird provides enterprise and government grade security
features such as S/MIME, digital signing, message encryption, support for
certificates and security devices.
Thunderbird gives you IMAP/POP support, support for HTML
mail, labels, quick search, smart addressbook, return receipts, advanced
message filtering, LDAP address completion, import tools, powerful search,
and the ability to manage multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts.
Thunderbird lets you add additional features as you need
them through extensions. Extensions are a powerful tool to help you build
a mail client that meets your specific needs.
This software may work well enough to be relied upon as
your primary messaging client as it is based off a stable Mozilla 1.6 architecture.
However, Mozilla Thunderbird is still a preview release, and therefore several
features may not be complete.
Anti-Virus software Use it and keep it up to date.
Internet Explorer - Don't use it! Although I'm easily a member of the "I hate Gates" club, that has nothing to do with the recomendation. Common sense says that if you are going to gather information, write viruses, etc. you go after the largest audience. Since Microsoft has 96% market share, they are almost the exclusive target. This also includes Outlook and Outlook Express. Of the free alternatives on the web, I've chosen Pegasus mail, Netscape 4.7, and Mozilla Firebird. Pegasus mail will do just about anything you can imagine, including handling multiple accounts, and also has a good spam filter. Another new option for mail is Thunderbird. It can be found on the same site as Firebird. I am currently experimenting with Thunderbird and will offer an update next month.
I use Netscape for casual browsing and leave just about everything disabled. Version 4.7 is the last one that leaves control in the users hands. http://sillydog.org/narchive/
Mozilla Firefox (new name, same program) is new. Still in beta but I've found no major problems. It's small, fast, and does not need to be registered with the OS. You can run it from a CD if you choose. It has a new feature called "Tab Browsing" which is difficult to explain, but quite handy when you get the knack. It's my default browser for gathering news and information. Oh, did I mention, it blocks all pop-ups. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.html
