January 13 & 27, February 10 (Sun)................NATURAL DYE WORKSHOP -- in 3 PHASES
DYE on Sunday, Have HEAVENLY colors on Monday

FEBRUARY 10 ............................PHASE III -- NATURAL DYEING II
Learn the specifics about Mordanting and Natural Dyeing.
Make up small skeins of yarn (10 yards) or small fiber samples and sample the different natural colors available -- Logwood, cochineal, brazilwood, fustic, madder etc. You are welcome to bring both protein (wool, etc) and cotton yarns and fibers. Do not expect to dye large quantities of fiber or yarn. Sign up early so that enough mordant can be ordered.
What to bring: Heavy rubber gloves, stainless cooking pot or an un-chipped enamel pot, tongs, pre-washed skeins, waterproof apron, plastic labeling, waterproof sharpie, Zip-lock bags for wet skeins.

Course DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of weaving taught through basic techniques and processes for Tapestry and woven structures on four harness looms. Includes instruction in loom terminology and function, process of warping and threading, basic methods of pattern drafting and designing, planning color and texture in weaving. Will weave a sampler and an Alpaca scarf.

January 29 (Tues) ..............................ART 227:WOVEN DESIGN VI: FABRIC Exploration
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will build on the techniques learned in basic and intermediate weaving by further investigating woven structure and how it can be incorporated with painting, printing, and dyeing to result in a personal statement. Techniques to be covered are Ikat, woven Shibori, printing, stamping, stenciling, brocade & shrinkage through the use of different fibers in the fabric.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this course is to plan and complete a comprehensive woven piece utilizing those techniques covered in class. Samplers will be woven of each technique to investigate what the techniques will do.

February 5 to March 20 (TUES & THURS) ..................WEAVING DAYTIME 6 WEEK WORKSHOP
Beginning weavers would make two warps -- weave off a colorful sampler warp with a variety of threading /treadling patterns, then design and weave your very own alpaca scarf.
Experienced weavers will do a shorter version of Art 227 Woven Design VI: Fabric exploration described above.
This workshop is flexible and can be designed for individual instruction, different levels of weaving, and whatever fits your schedule best.
Beginners, intermediate and advanced weavers can be accommodated.

March 9 (Sun)................NATURAL DYE WORKSHOP (One Day)

The dye workshop on February 10 went so well that we are doing another session. Bring a pound of fiber (divided) to A Weaver's Yarn for another afternoon of dyeing fun. Please premordant half of your fiber or yarn for the madder, logwood and kamala experiments. We'll also be doing indigo and cochineal. A classic backpack from the Adirondacks complete with custom-made leather harness. This basket is what Jill calls the “ALASKAN FISHING CREEL”. Great for toting your salmon home after a fishing trip as well holding your kindling during the off season.

Review your warping techniques with a winter warp or learn how to paddle warp using many threads. No hassle beaming, even tension, & no tangles or loose threads? No loom, no problem. Make a warp & rent a table loom to take home, ($6.00 a week) or practice WARPING for the 2008 Youth Weaving classes.

April 12 (SAT) ....................................BISCUIT BASKET

This basket has a solid wood, 6" round base. Using round reed to hold the stakes in place for the beginning rows, the side will use both flat oval and a few rows of color to create a bowl-shaped basket.

This one is great to hold your fresh baked biscuits at the table or almost any other items you wish. Generally each basket is a little over 4" high with a 9" to 10" diameter at the rim. You select the colors to make your basket unique. Class size: maximum of 8 people.

April 15 (TUES) ....................................SMALL BISCUIT BASKET

Using a 4" round solid wood base, this class creates a smaller version of the April 12 Biscuit Basket class. Using similar materials, this class teaches the basic methods for working with a solid base on a smaller scale. This basket is about 4" high and 7" across at the rim.

This shorter evening class is designed for those with busy weekends who want to try basket making. Class size: maximum of 8 people.

MATERIALS: Snack, heavy scissors or floral shears, needle nose pliers, several old towels/rags, plastic dish pan or bucket, any Weaverite basket tools you may have. Hint: don't worry if you are lacking some of these items - I have extras & we often share.

April 19 (SAT) ....................................LOAF BASKET

This basket has a solid wood, 5" by 8" rectangular base. This basket uses round, 3/8" flat, and dyed 1/4" flat reed to create its rectangular shape. Several rows of color in the basket side will help to make each one distinctive. Size at the rim is approx. 4 1/4" high and 10 1/2" by 8" across the top.

The "Loaf" shape is great for serving bread, muffins, crackers, etc. It is also useful to hold or display items on your desk or counter. Class size: maximum of 8 people.

May 17 & 18 (SAT/SUN) ..............MULTI-COLORS HANDSPUN USING A DRUM CARDER with Deb Menz
**** ONLY TWO SPACES LEFT****
Learn to create unique & wonderful handspun yarns using 6 –12 colors in a skein. The yarns are repeatable without muddy colors because of the multi-step approach using more than one batt in a yarn. This workshop is also applicable to Felters and Needlefelters. Instead of spinning they would felt their samples. I'm sure the color theory that is presented for making the batts would apply to felting.

It is urgent that you respond regarding taking the workshop -- The instructor must order materials and ship to Alaska prior to the workshop. This basket uses a 6-inch square solid wood base. it can be used to serve rolls on the dinner table or to display items on your desk or other small treasures. It's also the right size to conveniently hold your paper napkins on the counter or table where they are easy to use. Pick your accent colors from several I will have already dyed for you. Class size: maximum of 8 people.

This round basket with a distinctive rim can be used to hold muffins or your treasures. Select from a variety of colors for the alternating dyed and natural reed spokes.
