TREASURER’S REPORT
OLD BUSINESS
There were approximately 1,100 bowls for sale, at the end of the sale only 175 were left. According to Stan these remaining bowls are selling briskly. The Silent Auction netted $3624 and the grand total for the event is now pushing $18,000!!!!!!
All present agreed that Anne and Michelle did a fantastic job of organizing the event.
Suggestions for next year included making Potters Guild applications and brochures available to shoppers, pictures of all potters contributing bowls and improving the check out procedure.
Gail reported that she and Mary Gebhard have publicized the Judy Weeden workshop in national ceramics publications and internet ceramic forums. She neglected to mention that Mary has created a beautiful flyer for the event, which we will post on the Guild web site. Gail and Mary plan to contact Judy soon to make final arrangements.
Conversations by members with Diana Berry have revealed the Fred Olsen has become reluctant to pay his own plane fare to the Liz Berry firing. Anne moved and Carol seconded that we provide his ticket. The motion carried, but not without dissent. All agreed that Nansi will research fares and also investigate the possibility of using airmiles so our cost will be minimized.
NEW BUSINESS
Jim Brashears requested our support in his effort to obtain a Liz Berry endowed scholarship at UAF. He has talked with University officials who have agreed to support the request for matching funds for the scholarship when it is presented to the Chancellor. If matching funds are granted, $12,500 will have to be raised to meet the $25,000 required for an endowment. The student ceramic association at UAF has voted to contribute $1,000 for each of the next two years. Jim has spoken with gallery owners who would like to host benefits for the scholarship; he feels that there will be sufficient community support to raise the funds. He stated that the Guild would be recognized as a contributor to the endowment and could participate in determining the qualifications of the recipients.
Discussion following his presentation was very supportive. Gail moved and Carol seconded that the Guild commits $1000 to the fund and our support in the fund raising efforts. Various suggestions for fund raising were made including a firing at Liz’s kiln to which the public is invited and the fired ware sold afterwards.
Gail reported that the accountant who has been assisting her in the 501c4 effort suggested that better accounting was needed for our Farmers Market sales. She presented forms which are very similar to those used by the Bear Gallery for this purpose. There was some discussion regarding the extra paper work involved, but Gail and Mary Bunch who do the Market accounting feel that it will not be a problem.
The Market clean up will be on May 7 from 10 am until noon.
There was discussion about the location of our Market shelves and whether they should be refurbished. We now know where they are, and that no one has the time at present to make them prettier.
