Ever since the dairy’s closure in 1966, the Creamer’s Dairy buildings have been closed to the public.  In 1977, the 12 acres on which these buildings sit was added to the National Historic Register.  The buildings and a fenced yard to the north of the buildings are currently used by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) for storage of equipment.

From its inception, Friends of Creamer’s Field has unsuccessfully attempted to allow the public to view the interiors of these historic structures.  ADFG’s recent need for more secure storage has put in motion a plan for ADFG to vacate the historic buildings and turn them over to Friends of Creamer’s Field.

A successful lobbying effort by Friends of Creamer’s Field and its members resulted in the two million dollar Capital Improvement Project (CIP) request for the new ADFG storage facility being reinstated into the 2009 capital budget by the House Finance Committee which was subsequently passed by the Senate on April 13th, 2008.  Thank you to everyone who contacted the Governor and Legislators voicing their support for this funding which is the first step to opening the historic barns to the public!

Currently, Friends of Creamer’s Field is working with the local ADFG administrators and wildlife staff to find a suitable location for the new storage facility away from the historic 12 acres and the fields used by migratory waterfowl.
