Opening the Historic Buildings...

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE       4/16/08

  1. Bullet  ALERT!  Click here for the Governor’s and legislators’ phone numbers and  e-mail addresses.

Contact the Governor ASAP to let her know you support this funding request and want it kept in FY 09 capital budget because Friends of Creamer’s Field has funding to get started on barn repair now!  Also, please take a moment to send a thank you to members of the interior delegation and the House finance committee for working hard at getting the CIP back in the capital budget last week.

BACKGROUND AND TALKING POINTS

  1. Bullet  Read the Letter sent to the Finance Committee members.pdf for more information on this important and exciting project!

  2. Bullet  The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) keeps their equipment stored in and around the historic dairy buildings.  All of this storage must be removed before the public can enter the buildings.

  3. Bullet  ADFG has submitted a $2 million Capital Improvement Project (CIP) request to build a new storage facility on or near the refuge so they can stop using the historic buildings for storage.

  4. Bullet  This CIP was included in Governor Palin’s 2009 Capital Budget but was removed by the Senate Finance Committee.  It needs to stay in the House version of the capital budget and remain in the final version of the budget to be voted on by the Senate at the end of the legislative session.

  5. Bullet  Once this funding is secured, Friends of Creamer’s Field can begin working on repairs to the dairy buildings.  These repairs will need to be completed before the public can enter the historic structures.

  6. Bullet  Read Page 8 of Interim Management Plan.pdf for more information on the ADFG’s management goals for the Refuge.
