The winning team crossing the finish line

From the Prez
Greetings everyone

I'm going to stray a bit from my normal topic of snowmobiling to focus on what I consider to be an extraordinary effort made by a group of folks that are trail users just like us. These folks recognized one of the challenges created by their chosen recreational method and opted to take the challenge full on rather than ignore.

This group of 1st class trail users is the Arctic Off Road Club. A local 4 wheel drive club that utilizes trails both summer and winter. As we all know when you use a wheeled vehicle in snow you are going to leave ruts. Some times large ones. Ruts tend to make things difficult for other trail users to follow. Solution? Build a drag and have the last vehicle in the caravan pull it. That is exactly what the folks at Arctic Off Road have done. They have, at our request, provide pictures of their group and their trail drag that we are including with this newsletter. They did not ask for the notoriety and had to be prompted to blow their own horn a bit.

Folks this is a HUGE deal. It is the epitome of good trail etiquette. Something for all users to learn from and my hat is off to them for their efforts. They tell me the drag is a work in progress and is being refined every time they go out. Reports from snowmobilers are that the trails are in excellent shape when the group gets done dragging. I encourage everyone to give them a pat on the back if you have the opportunity to do so.

Now on to snowmobiling. The local trail riding is winding down to a close. Mountains are still ok but lack of snow had been a hamper. The club has 4 more rides on the schedule. We'll see how far we get. Personally I'm about done except for a run to the Valdez Hill Climb. (unless I can sneak a quick run to the mountains in there somewhere) I hope you all had a good year of it.

There is an issue lerking out there concerning Native lands and access around Cantwell/Broad Pass. I would encourage everyone to check into it and learn all you can. There is a post to the Alaska State Snowmobile Association website forum from what appears to be an AHTNA representative and FST is discussing the issue. There is also information on AHTNA's website. Lots more to come on this issue in the future.

We had our most successful McLaren trip this year. Hopefully it will be a spring board for future overnighters to the Lodge. Sadly I missed it but next year I'll try again. We had a maiden voyage for the Cat Kitchen bbq this year. We pulled it into the mountains of Broad Pass and cooked our lunch just outside the border of the National Park. Within a couple hundred feet of the border markers. Worked great and a hot lunch in the middle of the wilderness was something special. Hopefully next year we will get more use out of it. For those of you headed to Arctic Man this year have fun and be safe.

El Presidente', Dean Allen
