The Mission of GPS Trail Maps

The idea of this site is twofold, first its a place from which you can download a GPS trail file, load it into your GPS and then go ride the trail. (We also provide a map with the trail on it that you should print and take with you.) Second, its a place for you to get your GPS trail posted. To do this record a trail with your GPS and then email the tracklog and waypoint files to us, we will post them for others to use. For more on this see Add your GPS trail.

Always Remember

That river trails can develop overflow and open water anywhere at anytime and trails will change course. Travelers should watch for hazards and travel cautiously while becoming familiar with the trail. Travelers should check the Trail Conditions web site, ask on our Fourm if anyone knows the current conditions, or call your destination for current trail conditions prior to travel.

You MUST read this:

The track log and waypoint files on these pages were created using a Garmin GPS, OziExplorer and FUGAWI software. They are only tested on Garmin GPS receivers, OziExplorer and FUGAWI software. The Editors of GPS Trail Maps highly recommends OziExplorer mapping software over FUGAWI. OziExplorer has many more features especially the excellent printing features which include actual scale printing and lat/lon grid lines on the printouts. The FUGAWI files are included for those who have not yet switched to Ozi!

These track log and waypoint files and USGS maps are all based on the North American Datum of 1927 for the Continental US ("NAD27 CONUS" in the Garmin). You must select this datum in your GPS for this data to correspond to the actual trails that you will be following.

Keep in mind that errors of up to 500 feet may occur while running a trail and comparing your actual position to a tracklog or waypoint. For more info on this go to Joe Mehaffey & Jack Yeazel's web site and look under "How Does GPS Work?"

Cautions:

Even if you are planning a day trip, always be prepared to spend the night. Equipment troubles, bad weather or unexpected mishaps can leave you stranded far from help.

File a Trip Plan with a Friend Always make sure someone knows-

  • when you plan to leave and return
  • where you are going
  • what type of vehicle you drive and the license number
  • what survival gear you are taking

Unpredictable Conditions

Plan for cold weather, high winds, deep snow and unexpected changes in weather. Temperatures may be as much as 25 degrees colder than in town! Thin ice, open water and overflow are common in many areas and create hazardous situations. Use caution at all river crossings! Be alert to avalanche dangers.

Emergency & Survival Gear, be sure to carry the following:

  1. dry matches and fire starter
  2. metal cup-for boiling water
  3. extra food items
  4. sleeping bag, ground pad and space blanket
  5. tent
  6. spare socks, gloves, hat and face mask
  7. first aid kit
  8. trail maps & compass
  9. ax or handsaw, and sharp knife
  10. equipment repair items and spare parts
  11. white gas for cook stoves and lanterns
  12. spare lantern mantles and candles
  13. snowshoes in winter time
